4 Other Places (Besides Netflix) Where You Can Stream Standup Comedy!
For the past several years, Netflix has dominated the game of the stand-up comedy special. But as more and more companies create streaming services and the popularity of stand-up continues to rise, the number of specials on other streaming services is only growing. Some comedians have exclusive deals with certain streaming services, and others spread the love, having full specials on multiple different services. No matter what streaming platform you have, we want to make sure you don’t miss out on any laughs. Here’s a list of other streaming services besides Netflix offering stand-up comedy specials!
1. HBO
While Netflix has been on the top of the stand-up game as of late, HBO was the original platform to get your special seen. Because of this, they offer an amazing combo of older, vintage stand-up as well as specials by new and upcoming comics. If you look back, you’ll find early specials from legends such as Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, George Lopez, and Dane Cook, paired with newer specials from comedians such as Marlon Wayans, "SNL"’s Chris Redd, Atsuko Okatsuka, Nikki Glaser, Bill Maher, and Pete Holmes.
2. Prime Video
Similar to HBO, Amazon's Prime Video has a grail of older stand-up specials as well as offering almost every one of Jim Gaffigan’s specials. Prime features older work from great comics such as Brad Williams, Demetri Martin, D.L Hughley, Sebastian Maniscalco, Kathleen Madigan, and Martin Lawrence, as well as more recent original specials from comics such as Nate Bargatze, Russell Peters, Zarna Garg, and Jimmy O. Yang. They also have a secret weapon: much of George Carlin’s discography is available to watch on Prime Video. If you really, truly want to learn to swear, this subscription may be worth it.
3. Peacock
NBC entered the streaming game with the creation of Peacock in 2020 and has done a fantastic job packing their stand-up library full of incredible specials. They not only have older work by Kevin Hart, Bob Saget, Iliza Shlesinger, Whitney Cummings, and Tom Segura, but they also showcase newer comics such as Preacher Lawson of "America’s Got Talent", Josh Johnson (a writer for "The Daily Show"), and Jay Pharoah of "SNL".
4. YouTube
Finally, the streaming service for the people. The free, wild, and seemingly endless array of all sorts of videos has become a platform for comics to produce and release stand-up specials who may not be able to receive network backing. Because of this, many of the specials on YouTube are of more modern, recent comics who want to get their work out there. If you happen to discover a comedian from TikTok, or hear about them at your local comedy club, chances are they have a YouTube special. Younger comics such as Matt Rife, Mark Normand, Sam Morrill, and Andrew Schulz all have full length specials released on YouTube. So fire up that free YouTube account, get ready to laugh, and before you know it, you’ll be 8 joyful hours deep down the YouTube comedy rabbit hole!
