Hey guys, Leslie Robbins here. Young Hollywood is joined by five phenomenal ladies. Take a look at A2O May. A2O May: Hi! We are A2O May.
Hello, I'm Jinyu.
Hi, this is Sujae.
Hello, this is Kat.
Hi, this is Choung.
And hi there, it's Masha.
Welcome back to Los Angeles and Hollywood. This is your second time here in LA. How was it this time? A2O May: Fresh. Like fresh feelings for us 'cause we're back with our debut album, Paparazzi Arrive and also we feel so lucky and so happy. We have a lot of perform, like promotion at US and also like we're promoting globally. So, uh, that we're very grateful to like like all our staff. We want to give all the audience like the best performance and also like the best music.
The first time you were here, you guys were in Wango Tango. That's not not small potatoes. That's amazing. A2O May: Yeah, doing Wango Tango was unforgetable, you know, it was our first promotion for boss in the US. So, um, it was very exciting and at Wango Tango we met so many people and so many fans. That was our first uh fan meeting at the backstage. So, uh we really couldn't forget about that. Yes. And also we met like Meghan Trainor and Doja Cat at the backstage and we got amazing advices from them. So Wango Tango was definitely the sweetest moment and a success.
Any advice that someone that you looked up to told you? A2O May: They really care about like our mental health 'cause we're like very new girl group and we like receive a lot of like comments from all of the uh fans and maybe some not so positive. Yeah, so they care about our like mental health. How to balance the um life and work. Yes.
So how is that going to balance the positive with you know, maybe the not so positive? A2O May: I think um the best way to do that is actually to turn the negativity to our motivation. Like some of the negative comments, there are no reason for them to comment that but sometimes it can be like a good advice that people are actually saying something that you can improve. Be open-minded and not to think of it in a very negative way yourself 'cause if you're gonna be negative then um you will see everything negative. So, it's very important for us to stay positive.
So how has America welcomed a C-Pop group? Tell me about that. A2O May: Audience here and of course our fans, Maniacs. They have been amazing. Um, we are getting like amazing energy from them. And also with our performance here, um, every time we see our Maniacs and when we have the chance to talk to them, they were being so supportive. So that gave us so much motivations to keep us going. So, so far so good. We are doing great and are we are receiving so much love from the US audience.
Well, speaking of love from the US audience, you guys had a record-breaking debut on US radio. Yes. Talk about that. A2O May: A few times like iHeart Radio and this time in New York we did our first live live show. We're so excited to perform it like in front of the audience and everybody is shouting. Everybody is yelling like A2O May, you're the best. So and also like the 10-years-old kids, they're like sitting in the front and they're like yelling like, "A2O May," they're they're singing along with us. So it's oh, it's so amazing and I think they're all very like we feel very warm.
So what are their fans like overseas versus here in the States? A2O May: I don't know if they're much different. Um, because I think they are all being very supportive. Super great energy. So I think um, there are no difference. They're all very um welcome welcoming. We just feel so loved.
Walk me through how you guys came to be because you are five gorgeous ladies. Super talented. A2O May: Thank you. Thank you.
So how does a group like this come together 'cause it doesn't just happen. A2O May: I think our personality just naturally just we just blend together and we just vibe uh with each other very well and we never fight. I don't think we ever have like a big fight and the more we stay with each other, I think the more we are becoming as a family. So now we are like inseparable. We are like sisters.
It's like your own little sorority. How does that go down with five girls? A2O May: Since we like work as a group together and our relationship and this becomes more closer. Yes and like a family. Just we help each other um for that and I think I I can see everybody's like growth in each other. We can never be bored because if you're like you are I'm bored with Choung, I'm gonna go to Jinyu. I'm gonna go to Sujae. So, um, we're always uh very hyped and um like nothing bores us. We're always making fun of each other and we make the most fun of everything. So it's very fun to like work with the girls. I mean like just imagine working with besties.
What does downtime look like when you're not working? A2O May: You know, sometimes we just like have a blanket and we just sleep like this.
Like this? You have a blanket right now. A2O May: Yeah. Yeah, just be like this. But um usually when we are um off work, um we usually just like watch movies together or we just talk about things. Horror movies. Yeah, you know we love forcing Sujae to watch horror movies with us because you don't like them either. Oh, I I I don't I don't like 'cause it's like it's so easy for me, you know. I think we're the same. It's so easy. I can't do it. Just say no. Just say no. Okay, just say no. Okay. I I'm going to give a no. It's scary. It's scary. It makes me scream and also Choung's all of the members their ears are hurt.
Okay, so if you're not watching a horror movie, which I wouldn't either. What's your go-to? A2O May: Barbie movie. When we blend together, it's super fun. You know, we tell different jokes. Also, uh like teaching each other like language. Different language from our hometown. Super fun.
Teach me something. A2O May: Okay, um when we say hello, we always say Nihao.
Nihao? A2O May: Yes, correct. When we're saying like you're pretty. Piao liang.
Piao liang. A2O May: Correct. Piao liang. And I want to teach you like a kind of food. It's a rice cake. And the and that's called um Ang Ku Kueh.
Oh, girl. Wait. Ang Ku Kueh. A2O May: Ang Ku Kueh.
Okay, so back to the music. You guys have started a new music genre. Can you talk about that because it's something that not a lot of people are aware of. A2O May: The music we do is called Zalpa Pop. It is defined by an era, you know. It's not like uh those like C-Pop or K-Pop defined by country or or something else. We want to represent our enthusiasm, like our story by our music of our generation.
So is calling you guys a C-Pop group wrong then? A2O May: Global group. Global group. But it is true, we're like Chinese and Chinese American all of us, but we usually just call us like global girl group but we're still based in China.
So let's talk about Shanghai. You guys are going back. What's it like being home finally? Is there downtime? Is it all work? What does that time look like? A2O May: Every time 'cause we have a day off or something, I just going home like spend some time with my mom. It's really sleep it's really sweet. It's not sleep. Yes, it's sleep. I I spend a lot of time for sleep. Uh 'cause I when I at home, I just feel like so relaxed. I love hang out and just hang out with with the members or just my friends and doing some like city walks and eating some ice cream. Yes, gelato. Choung has gelato, it's so good. And with my cat at home. My cat called Juliet. It's she's so cute and I just stay with her. I just feel oh, I'm so happy.
We can talk about your music but it's the dance moves, ladies. Oh my goodness. Your dancing is fire. A2O May: Thank you. Thank you.
Wow, talk about the rehearsals, the training. It's amazing and you have to teach me something. A2O May: Yes, sure. Sure. Our dance, it's on fire. Wow. Yes. It's on fire. Yes. 'Cause we're young like as young as Young Hollywood. Yeah, so I mean why not? Like we should do some like crazy dance. For Paparazzi Arrive, it's like more like a fusion of like different kind of dance. So it's um we have a lot of signature poses. So uh like we we can teach you later.
Oh yes. Oh yes. Maybe right now. Okay, a signature pose, yes? A2O May: Yes, it's like this. Yes, cool. You got it. With attitude. Yes. Like with a serious face. Ooh, slay. Slay. Slay. Yes, you got it. Our dance is usually usually super hard. You know, we need to uh train our bodies to get used to the intensity of the choreography and also not just the choreography. We also need to balance um between singing and dancing. That's actually the hardest part. The fans are the biggest motivation for us on stage to give out our full energy. We usually do our best on stage and I think that's why stage and stages for us are very special.
And so your fans have gotten to know you over the past year. So as you embark on year two getting to know everyone and being out there, what can fans look forward to? A2O May: Oh my God. Can I say it? Yes, we have like A2O show. Yes. We're gonna hold our own show like A2O show in China. The trainees and also and also A2O May. I think we're gonna like hold a performance together.
When can fans look forward to that? A2O May: Like end of this year, December. A2O May: And any new music? Sure. Of course. Recently we are preparing for uh new performance for SWAT. It is our lighting track in the album and we are preparing for that and we'll show we'll show that in our on our A2O show. So fans can look forward to that as well. You know, we have no limitations. We try all type of new music. So keep your eyes on us. Yes.
Ladies, how about we move some blankets and we do one easy dance move? Okay. A2O May: Okay. Right now we're in the uh music recording studios and um we have like a big banner out there. So when you walk into the uh place, you can actually see our posters. So it's like amazing. Yes. And um we have like dancing rooms for practicing on daily basis and we have like office area where staffs can like work. So it's a very good place.
Okay, ladies, what do we got? A2O May: All right. So we are going to teach you the iconic movement of the choreography and it's gonna be easy so don't worry about it. Okay, so the first movement we are going to close up our um palms like this. So the lyrics go, "I'm not gonna." Yeah. So "I'm not gonna run, paparazzi." Yes. You put your your arms um to the front. Yeah. So, "I'm not gonna run, paparazzi." And then "Paparazzi arrive." Yes, put your hands on your mouth and this hand we have a gun here. Yes. And we turn it into like 45-degree like this. Yeah. And maybe at the end we can do the most iconic pose. It's this one. The one we showed you before. Like this. So, I'm not gonna run, paparazzi arrive. Like a pose. Woohoo. Slay. Slay.
