Video game adaptations are everywhere right now, not just in theaters but on streaming, and the 2026–2027 slate is shaping up to be one of the most packed seasons yet! Fans of gaming lore, big worlds, and familiar characters are finally getting a wave of movies and series that aren’t just reboots of old hits like "The Last of Us" but ambitious takes on new franchises. Here are 10 upcoming video game adaptations in development and why each one has people talking!

1. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 3, 2026)

The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie is officially titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it takes inspiration from the beloved 2007 Super Mario Galaxy game, which expanded Mario’s world to interstellar levels. With Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black returning, and new cast members like Brie Larson joining, this film aims to bring Mario’s space-faring adventures to life with bright visuals and bigger stakes.

 

 


2. Mortal Kombat II (May 2026)

The Mortal Kombat franchise has always been synonymous with over-the-top battles and brutal finishing moves, and Mortal Kombat II is poised to bring that same energy back to theaters. Part of Capcom’s long-running fighting game legacy, this adaptation promises to lean into the series’ mythology, the iconic roster of fighters, and the visceral combat that fans expect. Directed by Simon McQuoid, it features Karl Urban as Johnny Cage alongside returning and fresh cast members from the tournament roster.

 

 


3. Resident Evil (September 2026)
After years of game popularity and mixed film outings, Resident Evil is getting a fresh reboot on the big screen. While specific plot details are still under wraps, the new adaptation is being directed by Zach Cregger, known for his work in contemporary horror like Barbarian, and is meant to pull more from the core games’ survival horror roots in Raccoon City. 


4. Street Fighter (October 16, 2026)
Street Fighter is one of the most iconic fighting game series ever, and a new live-action adaptation is officially set to bring Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and others back to life. The film is directed by Kitao Sakurai and stars a large ensemble including Jason Momoa,Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes, and others, promising an action-packed reboot of the classic World Warrior Tournament.  

 

 


5. "God of War" (TBA)

Amazon is adapting God of War into a live-action TV series, pulling from the critically acclaimed 2018 reboot and its 2022 sequel Ragnarök. With Kratos and Atreus at the center, the show promises emotional storytelling grounded in Norse myth and dramatic father-son dynamics. Ryan Hurst stars as Kratos with Callum Vinson as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and other notable cast members, with Frederick E.O. Toye directing the first episodes and Ronald D. Moore serving as showrunner.  

 

 

6. "Life Is Strange" (TBA)

A live-action adaptation of Life Is Strange is in development at Prime Video from Margot Robbie’s production company. The game’s story, focused on Max Caulfield’s time-rewinding powers and her deep friendship with Chloe, is beloved for its emotional depth and narrative complexity, making this one a promising drama that could translate well to television.

7. Return to Silent Hill (Available on VOD/Digital)
Horror fans have reason to be excited. Return to Silent Hill is a psychological horror film adapting Silent Hill 2, widely considered one of the franchise’s best, with its eerie atmosphere, haunting plot, and emotional twists intact. A return to the foggy streets and dark storytelling of the games make this one stand out among horror adaptations.

 

 

 

8. Angry Birds Movie 3 (December 23, 2026)

This animated sequel continues the Angry Birds theatrical franchise, combining slapstick comedy with bright, family-friendly animation inspired by the mobile game’s silly world. While full cast and director details have yet to be widely published, the sequel is expected to return many of the familiar voice actors (like Jason Sudeikis as Red) and creative team from the previous films.

 

 
 
9. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (March 19, 2027)

SEGA's speedy blue mascot is back in theaters with Sonic the Hedgehog 4, continuing the franchise’s successful live-action/CG hybrid run. Directed by Jeff Fowler with returning voices like Ben Schwartz as Sonic and James Marsden, plus Idris Elba as Knuckles, the film looks to bring more high-octane action and new character dynamics based on decades of game lore.

 

10. The Legend of Zelda (March 26, 2027)

One of the most highly-anticipated adaptations on the list is The Legend of Zelda live-action movie from Nintendo and Sony. Directed by Wes Ball and produced with involvement from Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto, this film stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda, aiming to bring Hyrule’s epic quests and fantasy world to the big screen with fresh storytelling grounded in the game’s expansive lore.
