'Eternity': Elizabeth Olsen’s Most Intriguing Role Yet?!

Elizabeth Olsen proves that there is life after death... and life after the MCU! The actress's latest film, A24's Eternity, premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival back in September and was released in American theaters late last month. So far, the film has received positive feedback from viewers and critics alike.
Eternity, which was written by David Freyne (who also directs) and Pat Cunnane and co-stars Miles Teller and Callum Turner, follows elderly couple Larry (Teller) and Joan (Olsen), who arrive in the Afterlife and are torn between making different choices that will determine how they spend their eternities. Throughout the film, you’ll witness a messy love triangle between Joan’s first love, Luke (Turner), who died before they ever had a chance to marry and grow old together, and her husband of many years, Larry. The film highlights how our choices shape our reality and true happiness comes from appreciating the life you live. This film will have you rethinking your life choices and reflecting on your personal relationships.
For years, Freyne has been intrigued by the idea of an Afterlife. In an MSN interview, he said that he wrote his film college thesis on the 1946 British fantasy romantic drama film A Matter of Life and Death, a movie that also talks about themes of eternity. However, unlike the 1946 film, which shows the Afterlife as a black and white place, he wanted to portray the Afterlife as a more lively environment and worked with different architectural designs and colors to bring his vision to life. “It was just a really lovely way of creating something that was, on the one hand, beautiful, and on the other hand, completely artificial, and constructed for the purpose of keeping these people somewhat happy in a somewhat familiar place," he said.
When it comes to working on projects that touch on supernatural themes, Olsen is a pro. Afterall, one of her most prominent roles is as Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films and in the miniseries "WandaVision". She has also played characters that are dealing with death and grief. For instance, in the 2018 Facebook Watch web television series "Sorry For Your Loss", she played a young widow named Leigh Shaw. She also starred as housewife Candy Montgomery in "Love and Death", an HBO limited series about a 1980 Texas killing which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film. It’s clear Olsen knows how to portray characters going through a difficult time or stuck in an unfamiliar situation.
Eternity is different from Olsen’s other projects because it blends comedy, romance, and dark themes like death and the Afterlife all in one. Unlike her other projects, death and the Afterlife aren’t shown in a negative or terrifying light but rather in a philosophical manner that shows that our choices and life paths have consequences.
Eternity is in theatres now!
