8 Celebrities Who Refused To Lose Weight For a Role!
The internet went into a frenzy when Kim Kardashian recently admitted to losing 16 pounds in only 3 weeks for the Met Gala. Was she promoting unhealthy eating habits, or is this normal? No, this is not normal, and others agree. Also recently, actress Bryce Dallas Howard revealed how she has been constantly asked to lose weight for roles her entire career but was, thankfully, not required to do so for her latest film Jurassic World Dominion when director Colin Trevorrow intervened on her behalf.
Celebrities are put under intense scrutiny for their weight, but here are some that said “No thanks!” to losing weight for a role or runway!
1. Florence Pugh
Pugh toldThe Sunday Times Style Magazine that was she was instructed to lose weight for a television show. “I was a baby and I thought that was Hollywood. And I thought, okay, this is how it works here… and then I felt stupid because I thought, well, of course, how could I come to L.A. and not have expected to have my weight discussed in a meeting?” Instead of losing the weight, she posts videos of her singing and cooking on her Instagram Stories. “Cooking with Flo” has become a fan favorite.
2. Aidy Bryant
Despite her incredible success on the legendary "Saturday Night Live", Bryant described to AdWeekly how she was only offered offensive and mediocre jokes. “There was one where–and I don’t think it has ever seen the light of day—a man was in a prison and the other guys in the prison were like, ‘You’ve got to get an ugly girl to be your prison wife and she’ll come and bring you food and have sex with you!’ And then they were like, ‘And that would be you.’” Instead of accepting these offensive offers, or shedding pounds in order to be more "acceptable", she stayed true to who she is and started to write for herself. She decided the only change she needed was the right kinds of roles, and her popular Hulu series "Shrill" followed.
3. Gigi Hadid
Before Gigi Hadid was labeled one of the biggest supermodels in the world, she was just a regular high school student. While in high school, Hadid played volleyball and still had a volleyball body once she graduated. Once she was out of school, she struggled to book modeling jobs because of her athletic built. She toldi-D, “It was a body that I loved. I knew how hard I worked to have those muscles, to be curved in those places.” In 2015, designer Jean Paul Gaultier was the first person to put her on the runway.
4. Lili Reinhart
Reinhart has been transparent with her fans about the body image issues that she deals with on the daily basis. “I want other young women to see my body on TV and feel comfort in the fact that I’m not a size 0. And I’m not a perfect hourglass shape…This industry struggles with an accurate representation of female and male bodies. So I commend the women who have helped our industry take a step in the right and authentic direction.” Reinhart has also voiced her opinions about Kim Kardashian losing an excessive amount of weight in a short time. “To walk on a red carpet and do an interview where you say how starving you are… because you haven’t eaten carbs in the last month… all to fit in a f*cking dress? So wrong.”
5. Kirsten Dunst
Dunst was told by director Sofia Coppola to lose weight for the drama film The Beguiled. Dunst refused, and the director was understanding. In 2017, Dunst spoke to Variety about this issue. “It’s so much harder when you’re 35 and hate working out… I’m eating fried chicken and McDonald’s before work. So I’m like, ‘We have no options! I’m sorry I can’t lose weight for this role.’”
6. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
In the early stages of her modeling career, Rosie was told that she had to get in better shape and lose weight. “I’m quite stubborn, so I didn’t.”
7. Alex Newell
"Glee" star Alex Newell auditioned for the lead role in Kinky Boots and the director stated that Newell’s weight would inhibit them from playing the role. Newell toldStylecaster, “I was like, 'This is a show where they’re encouraging you to be who you want to be. Don’t let them tell you who you should be.’ They literally looked me in the face and told me I was too big to play a role. There’s no limitation. My weight does not prescribe what I cannot do."
8. Ashley Graham
At only 15 years old, Ashley Graham was scouted in a mall and was instantly told to lose weight. However, this modeling agent was only the beginning. Graham voiced her opinion to the Las Vegas Review-Journal by stating, “The really hard moment was when my dad said, 'Honey, if an agent is telling you to lose weight, then maybe you should lose weight.'" Despite the comments about her weight, she became the first curvy model on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Edition.
