Why We're Excited About ‘The Marvels’!
The Marvels is the second film in the Captain Marvel series and is set to come out November 10, 2023. It’s one of Marvel’s biggest films coming out in 2023 and has fans extremely excited to watch. The trailer dropped on April 11, and since then, we have been counting down the days until it will be in theaters!
With an amazing all-female cast, a merging of similar MCU characters and cosmic abilities that you have to see to believe, it's no wonder fans are anxiously awaiting its arrival. Here are 3 major reasons we are excited about The Marvels!
1. Cast
The cast of The Marvels will consist of three main actresses: Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris. These three leads will portray powerful female characters, bringing an exciting feminism aspect to a franchise that has been historically male-dominated. Recently, the Marvel franchise has included more diversity in relation to race and gender. It will be exciting to the female superhero trio in the upcoming film.
Brie Larson will be returning in her role as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. She rose to fame after her role in 2015’s Room, an independent film that held an impressive 108 wins in the industry, including the Oscar for Best Actress for Larson. Her role in the film worked to make the film strongly feminist, attesting to the strength and power of women. Her role in the MCU's 2019 film Captain Marvel paved the way for the strong female-centric projects in the franchise like “WandaVision” and Black Widow.
Iman Vellani will also be returning to the Marvel universe as Ms. Marvel. Vellani is a Pakistani-Canadian whose first role was playing Kamala on the Disney+ television series “Ms. Marvel”. Her character, Kamala, is the first Muslim-American character in the Marvel franchise. The representation and inclusion of a Muslim teenage girl resonated with thousands who watched the show. Many have applauded Marvel for their accurate depiction and lack of stereotyping. Vellani was nominated for Best Actress in a Superhero Series at the 2023 Critics' Choice Super Awards.
Similar to her co-stars, Teyonah Parris will also make a comeback to the marvel franchise in her role as Monica Rambeau from "WandaVision". Parris began her acting career portraying the first major Black character on “Mad Men” in 2012. Since then, her roles in films like Dear White People, Chiraq, and Candyman are instrumental in discussing racial equality. A fixation on her character will be exciting in relation to gender and racial boundaries in Marvel films.
2. Storyline
Although details about the exact storyline of The Marvels is limited, the teaser for the film that Marvel released gives enough information that fans of the comics and films have been able to piece together. We know that Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau keep switching places with each other every time they use their powers. Because of this, they all have to team up to figure out the cause.
What’s truly exciting about the storyline of the film is that each of the 3 characters will finally meet up. Kamala, AKA Ms. Marvel, is a huge fan of Captain Marvel and is inspired by her work as a superhero. She is shown throughout the television series daydreaming about being Captain Marvel, wearing fan merchandise, and obsessing about superheroes. In the teaser, Captain Marvel even swaps places with Kamala and steps into her room full of pictures and posters of herself. These two finally meeting will be epic.
On the other hand, Captain Marvel, AKA Carol Danvers, has already met Monica Rambeau in the Captain Marvel film. When Carol forgets her identity after the plane crash, Monica’s mother and fellow fighter pilot, Maria, helps her remember her past. In the film, Monica befriends Carol as a little girl, helps her pick out her iconic superhero colors, and is even given Carol’s old flight jacket. As an adult, Monica appears in the television series “WandaVision”, where her origin story of how she got her powers is revealed. The idea of all 3 coming together is what makes this storyline so exciting.
3. Abilities
Marvel movies have always shown a wide array of superhero abilities. The display of heroic powers always causes excitement amongst an audience. But none of the previous Marvel films depict such an amazing display of powerful abilities.
Captain Marvel’s powers are extraordinary. Her character is one of the main reasons why Thanos is defeated in Avengers: Endgame” She single-handedly prevents Thanos from snapping his fingers with the Infinity Gauntlet. She gained her powers after being exposed to the energy of an engine powered by the cosmic relic which granted her the abilities of flight, superhuman strength, energy projection, reduced aging, speed, and more. She is regarded as the strongest Avenger.
Ms. Marvel was granted her abilities from a family heirloom bracelet. However, her powers in the television series are much different than her comic book powers. Since we are discussing her abilities in the upcoming film, the abilities we will focus on will be the ones from the television show. Her powers are born from cosmic energy, which grant her the ability to manifest it in any shape. She is able to shoot energy at foes, walk/run on air and water, and is able to stretch her limbs or create a powerful and enlarged fist.
Monica Rambeau’s powers are also cosmically derived. However, similar to Ms. Marvel, her powers and origin story are greatly different from the comics. In “WandaVision”, she attempts to go back through the hex barrier, which rewrites her DNA. Her abilities include flight, spectral vision, phasing, energy absorption, and the ability to transform herself into a spectrum of different types of energy.
Each of the 3 main characters in the upcoming movie have insane abilities that work very well with each other. It will be exciting to see how their superpowers are portrayed and what types of hidden abilities they will discover as the storyline progresses!
