TRACK BY TRACK: Big Time Rush’s ‘Another Life’

Written by Daria Hodies. Published: June 07 2023

After 10 long years, Big Time Rush has finally released their 4th studio album! Officially ending their 8-year long hiatus in 2021, Another Life is years in the making, full of songs that make us want to dance and sing our hearts out. Entirely written by the band’s four members, Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Logan Henderson, and Carlos PenaVega, this album tells a story and recalls personal anecdotes from their lives. Between the music and songwriting, the album comes together in a magnificent form that will blow fans away and make everyone say they’re back and better than ever! So without further ado, here is Big Time Rush’s Another Life, track-by-track!

1. "Can’t Get Enough"

This song starts the album off with the bang! The vocals are sultry, and a guitar riff keeps the song riding a wave of rock. When the beat drops, various tones and harmonies are combined to create a perfect balance between the four members’ voices. Fun and fresh, this is the kind of song that makes us want to drive with all the windows down singing the lyrics at the top of our lungs!

Favorite Lyrics: “Got me seeing stars on the ceiling / Wanna fall in love on the floor...”

2. "Waves"

The song begins with a kind of psychedelic beat that stays in the background during the majority of the song. Once the bass drops, the chorus leads the song into a techno-esque arrangement of synth, percussion, and guitars. This carries the song as each member sings and adds their individual flare that makes the band and this song unique. The lyrics are catchy and rhyme well, making this track one we personally can’t wait to hear live!

Favorite Lyrics: “20/21 vision, I see myself in your eyes...”

3. "I Just Want To Party (All The Time)"

This track, which borrows its chorus from the classic '80s Eddie Murphy pop tune, enters with faded out vocals that quickly become more prominent and launch us head-first into the song. The verses are faster compared to the chorus, creating a perfect contrast throughout. Along with soft harmonies, this track also features a saxophone solo after the bridge that absolutely warps the listener into another world and into Big Time Rush’s new era!

Favorite Lyrics: “It’s a show if were showing up...”

4. "Weekends"

With heavy synth and a few bass lines, this song starts off slow and then transforms itself into a faster-paced track. The guitar makes itself more prominent in the second verse, adding to the song’s electric feel and thrilling chorus. Each member gets a turn to sing about navigating someone who is hot and cold, making it frustrating and troublesome to connect with people any other time than weekends. Relatable and catchy, we’ll definitely be adding this one to our “it’s complicated” playlist.

Favorite Lyrics: “Either love me or let me go / Say you will but you won’t...”

5. "Work For It"

Opening with the voices of Logan and Carlos, this track has slow verses and a fast-paced chorus that gives the song a rock-like feel. The drums and bass are heavy, hitting the same cool tempo over and over. With flirty lyrics and alluring tones, Big Time Rush delivers a song about willing to work for what they want, regardless of any outside factors. Between the music and the words, this one feels like a hit to us!

Favorite Lyrics: “You shine like you’re in the spotlight...”

6. "Forget You Now"

This song stuns at the beginning with a beautiful set of harmonies that are being sung by a choir. As the song moves forward, a killer bass track carries the song as it is being sung. Kendall’s voice has hints of raspy-ness and gravel tones that extend into the high notes he and James hit, giving the song a bit of a rock appeal. It’s the perfect jam for trying to get over that one person your brain just can’t seem to shake!

Favorite Lyrics: “You haunt me like a long lost melody in my head...”

7. "Brand New"

This slow and moving ballad jumps right in at the start, accompanied by violins, acoustic guitar, and some percussion to keep the beat going. This song stands on its arranged harmonies and vocals, while also creating a sense of warmth to the listener with its meaningful lyrics. This track dedicates itself to whoever made Big Time Rush feel seen after a time of uncertainty and feeling alone. It’s also one of those you just can’t listen to without shedding a tear, so we recommend having some tissues on standby!

Favorite Lyrics: “Then you came into my life / You brought me back to life...”

8. "Ask You Tonight"

Starting off with an acoustic guitar and working into a steady drumbeat, "Ask You Tonight" is a romantic love song with a timeless feel. The vocals are arranged into perfect harmonies, and each member hits a series of high notes effortlessly. The lyrics and music combined give it that classic boy band vibe we have all come to love, and the lyrics speak to finally asking that special someone to spend the rest of their life with them. This track hits us right in the feels!

Favorite Lyrics: “And for the rest of my life / Plus like a million more years / You’re the only one I wanna love...”

9. "Superstitious"

Funky guitar riffs and a steady bass line with a few drops make this song fun and perfect to dance along to. The band alternates from singing in high and low registers, giving the song a contrast of blended tones and various harmonies. When the bass drops, there are a few instrumental sections that blend together perfectly. The lyrics allude to not wanting to be superstitious when it comes to love, making the song relatable and one to sing along to all Summer long!

Favorite Lyrics: “Genie in a bottle / Got me wishing that its meant to be...”

10. "Another Life"

This song wraps up the album and the story being told on it with a nice metaphorical bow. It has everything, from harmonies and high notes to violins and an arrangement of guitars, bass, and drums that keep the song going until the very end. Big Time Rush sings about not wanting to wait until another life to pursue what they love and be the people they want to be. The song ends with the sound of a heartbeat, alluding to not only a period of birth for their new era but also an outpouring of love to everything and everyone they hold in their hearts. This song may be last on the album but marks "another life" for Big Time Rush.

Favorite Lyrics: “I’m not gonna wait for another life / To feel alive...”
