From Barbie’s pink domination to the strong ensemble casts of Joy Ride & Bottoms, the Summer of 2023 has truly been the Summer of Celebrating Women. If you’re in need of a boost of girl power and don’t know where to start, here’s a list of this Summer’s #girlboss movies that’ll remind you that there’s no limit to female empowerment!

1. Barbie (written by Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach)

Since the release of Barbie in theaters on July 21, Barbie went from being a beloved childhood toy to being a cultural phenomenon, and with good reason. Don’t be fooled by the razzle dazzle of pastels and play toys, though, because Barbie is a movie for everyone. An anthropomorphic spin on the classic dolls, the film will get you thinking about feminism, motherhood, and self-discovery. Most importantly, it’s chock full of hilarious and heartfelt moments. If you’re ever in need of an emotional pick-me-up that screams girl power, Barbie is the way to go. Currently in theaters; coming to Digital September 5.

2. Joy Ride (written by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, Teresa Hsiao, & Adele Lim)

From the screenwriter of Crazy Rich Asians comes a raunchy female road trip comedy that demands to not be taken seriously. Starring Ashley Park, Stephanie Hsu, Sherry Cola, and Sabrina Wu, Joy Ride is a crazy journey into exploring Asian self-identity in the funniest way possible. The quartet’s journey to find Audrey’s (Park) birth mother in China is met with countless misfortunes and wild debauchery. Joy Ride manages to authentically capture the shared experience of having mixed cultural identities. Follow these unapologetic women along an exhilarating rollercoaster of a movie! Available to rent on Prime Video, YouTube, and Apple TV.

3. Bottoms (written by Emma Seligman & Rachel Sennott)

Helmed by one of Hollywood’s breakthrough female filmmakers, Emma Seligman, comes another pairing between herself and Rachel Sennott (of the critically-acclaimed Shiva Baby). Drawing inspiration from Fight Club, Seligman envisioned a queer teen sex comedy that showcased queer sexuality in all its raw messiness. Co-starring in the movie is one of Hollywood’s fresh new faces, “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri, who is sure to deliver a great comedic performance. Two girls who start a self-defense club for girls to get with their love interests? That’s what I call an entrepreneurial spirit! In theaters August 25.

4. You Hurt My Feelings (written by Nicole Holofcener)

If you’re looking for a calm and cozy watch on a rainy day, You Hurt My Feelings is the movie for you. With Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tobias Menzies as a loving married couple, the film follows the couple's falling out from an honest comment about her newest novel. Even as a well-known novelist, Beth (Louis-Dreyfus) learns to navigate her pride, her relationship with aging, and motherhood. It’s a quiet exploration of what it means to be authentic and supportive and, more importantly, that being a leading lady doesn’t have to have an expiration date. Available to rent on Prime Video, YouTube, and Apple TV.

5. No Hard Feelings (written by Gene Stupnitsky & John Phillips)

In a new twist on the commonly male-driven sex comedy, Academy award winner Jennifer Lawrence takes the reins on No Hard Feelings by being the lead of this brazen and raunchy comedy. You may think a girlboss is someone that has their life together, but Maddie Barker (Lawrence) proves us wrong by being the exact opposite. As an Uber driver facing bankruptcy, Maddie is exceptionally savvy in her attempt to obtain a new car and save her career. What follows is a series of gut-busting hijinks between Maddie and shy, inexperienced 19-year-old Percy Becker (Andrew Barth Feldman) that are sure to leave you in stitches! Available to rent on Prime Video, YouTube, and Apple TV.
