It can be a tremendous burden taking on multiple roles in the production as an actor who is also working behind the camera as a director. People don’t realize how demanding it is to prepare for a new role, especially when dealing with the whole production of the film as well. It requires not only mastering the demands of embodying a new character — delving deep into the psyche of someone intricate, layered, and alive — but also balancing this with the immense responsibility of overseeing the production process. However, some stars are not afraid of the challenge. Here is the list of actors who shine in front of and also behind the camera!
Bradley Cooper – A-List Actor and Acclaimed Director
Bradley’s Cooper directorial debut, A Star Is Born, was both a critical and commercial success, earning Cooper widespread acclaim for his ability to bring out nuanced performances and craft a heartfelt, memorable story. Cooper not only directed but also co-wrote, produced, and starred in the film, displaying his commitment to every aspect of the creative process. Some people can actually do it all. His follow-up film, Maestro, made even more of a splash, earning 7 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor. Neither film, however, earned Cooper the coveted Best Director nod, but we're sure it's only a matter of time!
Michael B. Jordan – Champion of Diverse Voices and Authentic Stories
Actor, director, producer... The better question would be what Michael B. Jordan can’t do. Jordan’s directorial debut with Creed III showcased his vision and allowed him to take control of a beloved franchise. Stepping into the director’s chair gave him the chance to shape the next chapter of Creed with a unique perspective and personal touch, adding even more depth to his role as Adonis, and he's signed on to direct Creed IV, which is currently in pre-production. Through Outlier Society, his production company, Jordan continues to champion diversity and representation, showing the industry that inclusive storytelling isn’t just needed, it’s the future.
Women Taking Charge
Recent years have shown us that women taking leading roles not only in front of the camera but also behind the scebes leads to incredible success. One of the most iconic 2023 movies, Barbie, was produced by the beloved and extremely talented actress Margot Robbie. Before Barbie, she had already produced such incredible films as Promising Young Women, I, Tonya, and Terminal. Apart from Barbie, another critically acclaimed 2023 film that Margot Ribbie produced, Saltburn, saw huge success. Currently, Robbie is producing and starring in Emerald Fennell's adaptation of Wuthering Heights, plus she has over a dozen other upcoming projects in the works! When does she have time to do all of this? Who knows, but we are thankful for all the hard work that brought us the movies that will forever leave a mark in the history of films.
Young Hollywood Taking Over
Zendaya has captivated audiences since her days on the Disney Channel, but her evolution into a producer has revealed her to be a true Hollywood powerhouse. As one of the youngest executive producers on HBO’s hit series "Euphoria", Zendaya isn’t just acting — she’s helping craft the raw, intense storytelling that resonates deeply with her audience. But her work on "Euphoria" is just the beginning. In 2024, not only did she play the lead role of strong and goal-oriented Tashi in Challengers, but she also produced the film. With each project, Zendaya proves she’s not only interested in the fame that comes with her talent but in the powerful storytelling that her influence can drive forward.
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – Lifelong Collaborators and Industry Powerhouses
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have been Hollywood’s golden duo since their breakout with Good Will Hunting, but their work as producers and directors has only strengthened their partnership and impact on the industry. Affleck’s directing career took off with hits like Gone Baby Gone and Argo, the latter winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. His ability to craft intense, character-driven stories has made him one of the most respected actor-directors in Hollywood. Damon has also expanded his role behind the scenes, often collaborating with Affleck on producing ventures. Recently, they co-founded a new production company Artists Equity, with a focus on giving creative control back to artists and ensuring they have a fair stake in the success of their work. Their combined efforts as producers and directors demonstrate a dedication to reshaping the business side of Hollywood, emphasizing storytelling that is both impactful and artist-friendly.
New Familiar Faces
Some other names that have made their mark in the acting world who have now stepped behind the camera include Scarlett Johansson, Finn Wolfhard, and Harris Dickinson, all of whom are making their feature directorial debuts this year. ScarJo's film, Eleanor The Great, is set to debut at Cannes next month and is already getting tons of buzz. Likewise, Dickinson's film Urchin will also make its debut at Cannes, while Wolfhard's Hell of a Summer just hit theatres earlier this month.
The trend of creative people taking charge of the productions have brought us iconic and wonderful films that will shape the future of Hollywood and remain in our hearts forever. We love seeing actors have more creative freedom in their projects as producers and directors and hope to see more stars taking on new roles and opening new possibilities!
