Celeb Stylist Law Roach Cements His Place In Fashion At The Met Gala!

Written by Lee Lard. Published: May 09 2025

Earlier this week, we celebrated fashion’s biggest night at the 2025 Met Gala. The annual fundraiser for the Costume Institute’s theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” with the accompanying dress code “Tailored For You”. For celebrity stylist Law Roach, it was definitely a big night.

Law has gained notoriety in recent years for working with A-listers like Zendaya, Ariana Grande, and Anya Taylor-Joy. He’s also appeared as a primary or guest judge on competition reality shows such as "America’s Next Top Model", "Legendary", and "RuPaul’s Drag Race". In 2023, he debuted the Herve Leger x Law Roach runway collection.

The fashion mogul has become so synonymous with Black celebrity fashion that we knew he would come up with something incredible for this year's Met Gala. The theme was influenced by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The book explores the way fashion affects Black identities with a focus on Black dandyism. This year, Roach curated 7 incredible looks in conjunction with Daniel Lee and the Burberry team for the Burberry table. He also styled the likes of Zendaya, Tyla, and Nicki Minaj, and attended in his own right.

For the Burberry table, Roach began with the guest list. He was determined to bring together a diverse group of creatives. This group was impeccably selected, with actresses like Angela Bassett and Jodie Turner-Smith, rappers Cardi B and Andre 3000, model Liu Wen, ballerina Roberto Bolle, NFL quarterback Jalen Hurts, and his wife Bryonna Hurts. “I was involved in the sketching and inspirations for each of the guests,” Roach said. “I’ve been in every single fitting.”

Roach met the challenge of blending Black influences like dandyism, zoot suits, and the La Sape movement with the Burberry style, which is largely influenced by the Edwardian Era. Burberry’s Winter 2025 runway was inspired by the English countryside, so you see that reflected as well.

Angela Bassett wore a vine-jacquard tuxedo cape, waistcoat, and trousers in a striking blue velvet. Styled with a cane and hat by designer Jon Narcisso Millinery, she was the epitome of regal.

Andre 3000 wore a bespoke boiler suit and red hat, with a 30-pound baby grand piano strapped to his back. The piano was a foam and luan scale model of the larger instrument designed by Pink Sparrow. This look was also a nod to the surprise release of his new project, 7 piano sketches.

Cardi B’s look combined the sharp masculine elements of the dandy aesthetic with feminine ruffles and fringe, making the silhouette all her own. The centerpiece of the outfit was a moat-green floral damask coat. This was paired with trousers, a cumberbund, and a velvet top. “There’s also a female counterpart to the dandy – the quaintrelle,” Law Roach said. “Everything’s perfectly tailored. The waist is perfectly tiny.”

Jaylen and Bryonna Hurts wore coordinating glittery outfits for their Met Gala debut. Jaylen confirmed just a couple weeks ago that the pair had tied the knot when he referred to her as “my wife” during a Men’s Health interview. He wore a velvet double-breasted suit with floral embroidery, while the same pattern appeared on Bryonna's maroon dress.

Roberto Bolle wore a double-breasted leather suit with a geometric jacquard shirt. His geometric footwear were Burberry Check Ledger boots.

Jodie Turner-Smith wore a custom embossed bustle coat and a sunflower jacquard corset and shirt. Her hat was by Esenshel. According to Burberry, her outfit “pays homage to a portrait of Selina Lazevski, a Black Equestrian who lived during the Belle Epoch [sic] in Paris."

Though she wasn’t part of the Burberry table, you can’t think of Law Roach’s styling without thinking of Zendaya. She arrived at the Met Gala in a glam ‘70s suit in a sparkling white. The look channeled the iconic wedding suit of jet-setting activists Bianca Jagger. The suit featured bell-bottom pants, a fitted blazer, and a wide floppy-brimmed hat that swooped artfully over her eyes.

It just so happened that Emmy & Golden Globe-winning "Shogun" actress Anna Sawai arrived wearing a very similar outfit. Both women looked stunning, but it was Roach who was stunned. “I am dying cause she got on Zendaya’s look,” said Roach. “I’m so glad we came early!”

But the stylist recovered and continued his own walk down the blue carpet in a vine jacquard velvet tailcoat, tuxedo trousers with side stripes, and a white shirt. The look was inspired by Prince’s iconic silhouettes. He also had a blonde shock of hair, very different from his usual dark 40-inch style. “This is such a special night, and I wanted to change it up a bit,” said Roach. “I’ve been blonde before, but never like this.”

“This Met Gala is personal,” he went on to explain. “Not just for me, but also for all the people like me.”
