The Casting
From Academy Award winners like Matt Damon and Lupita Nyong'o to superheroes like Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson, it would seem that Nolan set out to assemble an absolutely all-star cast. Damon plays the titular character, Odysseus, as he embarks on his long journey home after the Trojan War. Damon seems perfectly suited for the role of a lone survivor trying to make his way home, having portrayed an extremely similar archetype in The Martian. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Odysseus's strong and devoted wife, who must hold the kingdom together during her husband's absence. Not only do these castings seem like a perfect fit, but they are joined by other talented performers such as Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and Mia Goth. On the very slim chance that the script falls short of expectations, this cast is more than capable of carrying every scene through powerful, emotional performances.
The Practical Effects
It should surprise no one that Christopher Nolan has opted to use practical effects for this film. Nolan was able to make a superhero trilogy without an over-reliance on computer-generated visuals, so he can surely do the same for The Odyssey. However, The Odyssey is arguably far more supernatural than Nolan's depiction of Batman. Throughout the story, there are Cyclopes, sea monsters, whirlpools, and cannibalistic giants. This story contains so many fantastical elements that it is truly amazing Nolan has remained committed to in-camera effects. According to reports, Polyphemus the Cyclops is portrayed by a 60-foot-tall practical build complete with animatronics. Modern blockbusters are so often reliant on CGI that this film will feel like a true breath of fresh air on top of looking visually spectacular.
The Dialogue
Through the trailers and interviews with Christopher Nolan, it has become clear that The Odyssey will feature a modernized style of dialogue. This is a major creative decision on Nolan's part because the original story is written in Homer's ancient style of speech. Will this departure from the source material be detrimental to the film? We highly doubt it. The original text of The Odyssey is iconic, but Homer's style of writing can feel somewhat stilted and convoluted by modern standards. There is so much information that needs to be conveyed, it is far easier for audiences to understand more contemporary dialogue. On top of that, every actor in this diverse cast has their own style and method of performance. If they were constrained by the words written nearly 3,000 years ago, it might limit their ability to fully convey the emotions of their characters. There are so many different translations of the original poem that it doesn't make sense to treat one English version as though it is the definitive interpretation. This brilliant creative choice makes the film more accessible to modern audiences while also differentiating it from previous adaptations of the story.
The Story
Homer’s original poem is one of the single most impactful works of writing of all time. While the story of the Greeks hiding inside of a giant wooden horse to win the Trojan War is far more famous, Odysseus’s journey home resonates on an emotional level. This man has already fought for everything he cares about, and he has handily won -- all he wants to do now is return to his loving family. Yet, through a series of dangerous encounters with various monsters, Odysseus is the only one to make it home. It is so gratifying to see someone with such intense feelings of love fight tooth and nail to reunite with his wife. There is a lot of depth to the characters; while Odysseus is admirable, he is certainly not perfect, and many of his men die as a result of his poor decision-making. All of these trials and tribulations lead to an amazingly satisfying ending where Oydsseus gets to see that, although his family was under duress, they were successfully able to fend for themselves until his return. There are so many amazing sequences of The Odyssey that we cannot even begin to scratch the surface.
There is no doubt in our mind that this film will long be considered a visual masterpiece filled with excellent performances and an incredible story. It may seem like Nolan has set expectations unbelievably high with Oppenheimer, but people said the exact same thing after The Dark Knight and Inception. Time and time again, Nolan has found ways to surpass his own lofty standards. If these details are any indication, The Odyssey will be just as impactful as the story it is based on.
