(ALMOST) TRACK BY TRACK: Sabrina Carpenter's 'Short n’ Sweet (Deluxe)'

After winning her first Grammy -- Best Pop Vocal Album for the album Short n’ Sweet -- just a couple weeks ago, Sabrina Carpenter decided to celebrate with a Valentine’s Day release of Short n’ Sweet (Deluxe)! Featuring four brand-new songs and an exciting feature by the country legend herself Dolly Parton! Let's break down all the new material track-by-track!
"15 Minutes"
The first new addition to the album is a super fun pop number with a severely danceable beat. The addition of strings in the chorus and bridge makes the whole song sizzle. The lyrics are a reflection on the idea of “15 minutes of fame”, celebrating just how much Carpenter can do with just 15 minutes. Of course, there is also a healthy amount of the pop star's trademark innuendo.
Favorite Lyrics: "I can do a lot with fifteen minutes / Only gonna take two to make you finish..."
"Please Please Please" (feat. Dolly Parton)
This next song takes me back to my personal country roots with superstar Dolly Parton featuring on this country-twanged remix of the hit “Please Please Please”. The two have a beautiful double soprano harmony on the choruses, and Parton does a predictably fantastic job covering the second verse. The highlight of this track is the music video: a black and white feature of the two in an old pickup truck, which is revealed to be carrying the struggling body of the man who embarrassed Sabrina.
Favorite Lyrics: "If you don’t wanna cry to my music / Don’t make me hate you prolifically..."
"Couldn’t Make It Any Harder"
My new favorite track on the album, “Couldn’t Make It Any Harder” is a gorgeous ballad. The song is more vulnerable than most of her work, opening up about how difficult it is to let people in after the “f**kboys you’ll never meet”. The backing vocals and use of bells gives the whole thing a choral, angelic feel that brings you right into the message.
Favorite Lyrics: "Oh what I’d give to be / Meeting you as the glass-half-full version of me..."
"Busy Woman"
Picking it back up, we’ve got the dance-pop song “Busy Woman”. Playing off the lyrics in “Espresso” -- “I’m working late / 'Cause I’m a singer” -- the song reflects on how difficult it is to hold down relationships with her jam-packed schedule. Still, it flirtatiously opens the door for the right guy to “come into her calendar”. Carpenter brings in a fiddle on top of the drum beat, packing a real country-pop punch.
Favorite Lyrics: "And if you don’t need my love / Well, I didn’t want your b*tch a** anyway..."
"Bad Reviews"
The final song on the deluxe album, “Bad Reviews” is a full-on country ballad. The short and sweet (ha!) track speaks on Carpenter’s self-admittedly terrible taste in men. The song calls out a boyfriend “that’s not even [her] boyfriend”, admitting that she’s still in love with him after everything. The jaunty melody wraps up the album beautifully, rounding out the balance between pop and country that the album has been trying to strike since its release.
Favorite Lyrics: "If I close an eye, it’s almost like your red flags are blue..."
This deluxe edition makes our favorite album of 2024 feel complete, and we can’t wait to see what Sabrina Carpenter cooks up next.
