5 People We'd Love To See Host The Next Oscars!

Written by Nathan Rubin. Published: August 10 2024

The night of the formal Academy Awards ceremony is Hollywood’s most anticipated each year. As the day approaches, celebrities and cinephiles alike hold their breaths in suspense to see who might receive the most coveted honors in the film industry. Thus, there’s quite a bit of pressure on the event’s host, who is responsible for entertaining a star-studded and incredibly nervous crowd of celebs as well as a nail-biting live audience of millions. And recently, the obvious choices like Jimmy Kimmel and John Mulaney have strayed away from the gig due to its difficulty and recent controversy. Whether it be unplanned slaps or misspoken winner announcements, a lot can go wrong. As buzz around the 2025 Oscars host increases, who could do the trick? Here are our top picks.

1. Ayo Edibiri

Although she may be a contender to win one of the coveted awards next Spring, we don’t think this should necessarily count her out of the race. A big part of the Academy’s strategy for this upcoming Oscars awards circuit is to bring in a younger crowd of viewers. Ayo would do just that — she’s a superstar who emerged from the YA scene. Charismatic, quirky, and universally adored, Ayo could handle herself on the prestigious stage.

2. Julia Louis-Dreyfus

In a tumultuous time, the Academy needs someone genuinely funny to host their ceremony. Julia Louis-Dreyfus might just be the perfect pick, as she has a resume that solidifies her as a treasured comedian. Not only this, but the Emmy-decorated show "Veep", in which she played the lead, is going viral again. She appeals to both younger and older generations and has a gentle yet boundary-pushing way of having a little fun.

3. Quinta Brunson

Also a very active star in the scene, Quinta Brunson has one of the best images in Hollywood. A benevolent genius with talent in all kinds of directions, she’s most present in the television scene, giving her a healthy distance from the heated competition for these film-exclusive awards. She is the perfect age to bring generations together with a stage presence to match — have you seen her in an interview?

4. Ryan Gosling

You can’t go wrong with Ryan Gosling. He’s allergic to controversy, and ever since Barbie released last Summer, he’s been untouchable. Kids love him, adults are infatuated with him, and the Academy would be silly not to seriously consider Gosling for the role of Oscars host. He has just the right combination of razor-sharp humor and good-natured charm to light up the ceremony.

5. Melissa McCarthy

Although she may be an underdog for this gig, Melissa McCarthy is one our favorite picks. Almost everyone associates McCarthy with a healthy helping of laughter. How could you not? Her career has calmed down in the past 5 years or so, but her filmography speaks for itself. This would be the perfect move to get her back in the spotlight that she deserves, where she can have a room in stitches — as long as she keeps it family-friendly.
