WOMEN WE LOVE: Keke Palmer

Written by Jazlen Patrick. Published: July 31 2022

Amidst her new role as Emerald Haywood in new Jordan Peele film NOPE, Keke Palmer has brought more attention to her name than ever! But her career didn’t just start here!

Keke “Keep a Job” Palmer has been in the entertainment industry for over 20 years, and at only 28 years old, this says a lot! Whether it’s singing, acting, or talk show hosting, Keke has done it all and done it well!

She began her acting career early in 2004, but Akeelah and the Bee (2006) was known as Keke’s first breakout role, playing the title role alongside veteran actors Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. Not a bad way to get your start!

This role set her up for a long career in even bigger movies including the Disney film Jump In (2007) with High School Musical actor Corbin Bleu, playing his neighbor and main motivation behind him pursuing his true passion for double-dutching.

Keke also starred in Nickelodeon’s "True Jackson VP" (2008-2011), which led her to be the first Black woman to star in her own show on Nickelodeon! Okay, Keke, we see you!

Other notable acting roles followed, including movies Joyful Noise and Nickelodeon's Rags, and TV shows "Scream Queens" and "Star", amongst many others, of course. Oh, and not to mention being the youngest and first Black Cinderella on Broadway! Keke’s acting resume is long, okay!

But don’t be mistaken -- even if you don’t see her face, Keke is still voicing some of our favorite cartoon and animated characters behind the scene, including Aisha in Nickelodeon's "Winx Club", Peaches in Ice Age: Continental Drift and Collision Course, Maya in "The Proud Family: Louder & Prouder", and Izzy Hawthorne in new movie Lightyear, just a few to name. The list goes on!

Acting isn’t all she can do! Keke is also a musical artist, and chances are, if you’ve seen one of her movies, you’ve heard her singing in it too! In movies like Jump In, Rags, and Joyful Noise, you will hear her on the soundtrack! She even has some of her own hits, including "Dance Alone", "I Don’t Belong to You", and "Handsfree". You might even catch her showing off some of her dance moves in her music videos. Yep, she can dance too!

But Keke’s talents don’t just stop there. Keke also had her own talk show on BET Networks, "Just Keke", making her the youngest TV talk show host ever!

Her new movie NOPE is in theaters now, and on August 9 you can expect her on NBC’s reboot of the classic game show "Password" as the new host! We told you she keeps a job!

Keke’s career just gets bigger and better, and we’re super excited to see what else she has in store for us in the future!
