We have seen the alien-apocalypse trope play out time and time again on screen with classic films like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and War of the Worlds but never like this. “Pluribus" breathes new life into an overdone blueprint, instantly capturing audiences with exciting twists and turns with every new episode.

The new Apple TV series "Pluribus" premiered its first 2 episode on November 7, and so far the show has received nothing but rave reviews from fans and critics alike. However, the show’s instant success comes as no surprise, because the creator, Vince Gilligan, has a history for contriving some of the greatest shows in television history, including "Breaking Bad" and its spinoff series "Better Call Saul". The ultimate question is, can “Pluribus” live up to its predecessors and become the next big hit? So far, all signs point to yes!

The show’s premise centers on Carol, played by Rhea Seehorn, a romance novelist who is one of only 13 people in the world immune to an otherworldly virus that transforms its victims into a blissful, ever-smiling hive mind. After her wife, Helen, dies from the virus, Carol falls into a deep depression. Despite her miserable state, she must find a way to save humanity and restore everyone’s individuality — because if she fails, even her rare immunity may not be enough to protect her from eventually succumbing to the collective.

With streaming platforms giving viewers unlimited access to anything they want, whenever they want it, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for shows to resonate long enough to cement themselves as pieces of television history. "Breaking Bad" and "Severance" are among the most recent series to achieve that kind of widespread cultural impact. It takes a true showstopper to capture the public’s attention, and so far, “Pluribus" checks all the boxes.

Beyond its stunning cinematography, stellar acting performances, and masterful writing, the show explores profound ethical and moral dilemmas. It’s a series with real substance, one that immediately engages its audience by challenging them to think about the storyline. So if you’re looking for a show that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish — and leave you theorizing about what comes next — then “Pluribus" is the perfect series for you.

If you want to tune into the highly-anticipated finale, head over to Apple TV on Fridays to find out whether Carol ultimately saves the world!
