Dipping a little bit into each genre, Tyler Perry is goated, and it doesn’t stop at Madea. Tyler wears all types of hats and effortlessly kills each one. So let's look at some of the best Tyler Projects from every genre!
Comedy/Drama
It wouldn’t be right if we didn’t start with comedy and drama. Tyler Perry has kept us laughing for years and doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. His most recent comedy movie, Madea’s Destination Wedding, released on July 11 via Netflix. The trailer alone is entertaining and funny. But let’s dig deeper into Tyler’s catalogue and how he’s kept us gasping for air at his jokes throughout all these years.
Taking it back to 2005, Tyler Perry debuted Madea in Diary of A Mad Black Woman and won over the crowd. A blend of comedy and drama, with even moments where you laugh one minute and cry the next, it set the tone for Madea’s character and how it is still thriving 20 years later. Madea Goes To Jail is another example of a comedy-drama that Tyler has excelled in. Madea Goes to Jail is the highest-grossing Madea movie to date. Fans of Tyler’s work love that movie. Other comedy-dramas include Madea’s Family Reunion (2006), Meet The Browns (2008), Madea’s Big Happy Family (2011), A Madea Christmas (2013), and A Madea Homecoming (2022). There are so many to name. Tyler Perry has the comedy and drama scene on lock, and that's for sure!
Thriller
Tyler is no stranger to the thriller genre either. Whether he’s acting, directing, or writing, thrillers are not new to him. His ability to create suspense and excitement is A-1! Tyler can surely keep a crowd wanting more. Alex Cross (2012), a thriller in which Tyler played the fictional title character, perfectly demonstrated Tyler’s range in roles directly in front of the screen. Gone Girl (2014) is another thriller in which Tyler had an onscreen role. As far as off the screen and in the director’s seat, Tyler’s nailing that, too. A Fall From Grace (2020) was written, produced, and directed by Tyler Perry. It kept viewers on their toes and the internet talking. Let’s just add thriller to the list of many things Tyler Perry has done right.
Romance
Romance movies evoke a lot of emotions. Both happy and sad tears can be shed while watching romance movies. There are heartfelt moments and moments where you want to tackle the antagonist, and that’s how you know the movie or show is a good one. Tyler Perry has many romance movies that evoke emotions. These movies often portray a bigger message while keeping the audience entertained. Why Did I Get Married? (2007) and Why Did I Get Married Too? (2010) exemplify creating an underlying message while also displaying the reality of relationships. Tyler had on-screen roles for both of these movies. But that’s not it -- he’s putting in work behind the camera too. The Single Moms Club, a movie that Tyler Perry directed, is considered a romance movie and shows the reality of friendship and finding love again.
Action
Although Tyler hasn’t directed many action movies or shows, he has had roles in some action movies. Alex Cross (2012), as mentioned earlier, can also be considered an action film. Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021) is an action-packed movie based on survival where Tyler plays a smaller character by the name of Arthur. Though Tyler Perry wasn’t the main character in this movie, his energy throughout most genres of film and television serves Main Character Energy.
Crime
This genre is the one that Tyler Perry is getting aura points for as we speak, but first, let’s talk about his previous crime films and shows. The Family That Preys (2008), "The Haves and the Have Nots" (2013-2021), "The Oval" (2019-), and "Ruthless" (2020-) are all crime-related movies and shows that Tyler has had a hand in. All different plots yet one thing in common: excellence! Tyler’s directing skills have peaked in this genre. This is the lane many fans love to see from Tyler. In fact, Tyler’s exceptional work in the crime genre had the internet buzzing earlier this Summer with the release Straw, a crime psychological thriller directed by Tyler that demonstrates hardships and struggle as a single mother, Janiyah (played by Taraji P. Henson), does whatever it takes to raise her child. Without spoiling the movie, just know that "intense" is an understatement. You may cry, but Straw is indeed one to put on the top of your watch list.
Tyler Perry is seriously doing his thing. From actor, writer, director, entrepreneur, mogul, and so much more, Tyler’s got it covered.
