Modern-day Disney Channel Original Movies seem to center around fantastical musical franchises, such as Zombies and Descendants. Although these zany stories rely on elements of magic and surrealism, they can never compare to the outright bizarre and eccentric DCOMs that dominated thelate-'90s and early-00s.

Perhaps you have faint memories of Disney channel movies where leprechauns tormented children, or where worms came from outer space. Or perhaps you have no memories of early Disney Channel at all. Either way, Disney possesses a long list of made-for-television movies that are equally wacky as they are lovable.

For a while, these movies were lost to time, but the launch of Disney+ has allowed us to finally access them once again. So, if you’re willing to go down the rabbit hole of Disney Channel Original Movies, check out some of the most bizarre ones that aired on the Disney Channel 20+ years ago!

1. The Thirteenth Year (1999)

Who doesn’t like a mermaid movie? What about a merman movie? Disney’s The Thirteenth Year gave us just that with the story of a young boy slowly turning into a merman. Basically, the movie is a euphemism for puberty. Mix that concept with a classic coming-of-age trope and surprisingly good CGI, and you’ve got a good reason to rewatch.

2. The Luck of the Irish (2001)

The Luck of the Irish has a pretty similar plot to that of The Thirteenth Year.  A young teen realizes that he is a mythical creature -- this time a leprechaun -- when he slowly starts to transform into one. The movie involves cheesy humor and an awful lot of Irish dancing (as to be expected).

3. Smart House (1999)

Smart House follows a young boy who wins his family a smart house. After his father starts dating again, the boy programs the house to fill the role of his deceased mother. The plot sounds like a suspenseful thriller movie, and it strangely plays out like one after the AI “mother” traps everyone in the house.

4. Don’t Look Under the Bed (1999)

Don’t Look Under the Bed is classified as a “fantasy horror” movie; a rather strange genre for Disney Channel to cover. In the movie, a teen girl is framed for the town’s pranks. The actual culprit? The Boogeyman. Enough said.

5. Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire (2000)

This movie starts with two grounded siblings looking for a way to get their mother away from the house. As a result, they set her up on a date with -- you guessed it -- a vampire. Now the kids must break the vampire trance put on their mother with the help of (who else?) Van Helsing. This wacky Disney Channel movie is the perfect pick for your Halloween watchlist.

6. Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior (2006)

The one and only Brenda Song stars in this legendary movie about a Homecoming Queen who kicks butt. Essentially, the plot centers around an ancient evil dragon that is coming to destroy the world and the teenage girl (who is the reincarnation of a mighty warrior) that must stop them. Pretty intriguing, right?

7. Cow Belles (2006)

Your favorite "Potential Breakup Song" sisters, Aly and AJ, star in this outrageous Disney comedy. The story follows two spoiled teens that are forced to work on their father’s dairy farm after literally setting their house on fire. After the bank account of the dairy farm is drained, the girls must work together to save the family business. You can just imagine what chaos ensues.

8. Can of Worms (1999)

Can of Worms may be the most ridiculous movie on this list (and also the most fun to watch). The movie is about a teenage boy who signals aliens and brings them to Earth. After seeing the Earth’s modern technological advancements, the aliens decide to destroy the planet. If that’s not reason enough to watch, then take a look at the movie poster and see how you feel.
