The 8 Buzziest Film & TV Premieres From SXSW!

Written by Tal Israeli. Published: March 23 2024

South by Southwest is one of the most anticipated events on the Hollywood calendar, and by the time March rolls around each year, audiences are at the edge of their seats waiting to hear about the biggest premieres and news from the film, TV, and music festival. We’re here to give you all the scoop on the event, which ran from March 8-16, bringing you everything you wanted to hear about the shows and movies that you’ll be fawning over in the near future!

Here are some of the films and TV series that premiered at SXSW and are already getting buzz, from Anne Hathaway in a boyband heartthrob love story to Sydney Sweeney as a scream queen!

1. The Fall Guy

Ryan Gosling started his week in a hot pink suit on the Oscars stage and ended it on the SXSW carpet for his upcoming action-comedy film The Fall Guy. Starring alongside Emily Blunt, also fresh off her Oscar nomination for Best Picture winner Oppenheimer, this exciting release stars Gosling as a stuntman who must step in when the star of his film (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) suddenly goes missing. He not only falls for his stunts on set, but for the film’s director (Blunt). The Fall Guy was a hit at SXSW, with critics and audiences praising the movie’s fun tone and the stars’ chemistry. Luckily, the wait to see this one in theaters is not long with a May 3rd release date just around the corner! Plus, Ryan and Emily may have had the best entrance to SXSW we have ever seen, pulling up in style in a pickup truck.

2. Y2K

Though we’ve been on the Y2K fashion train for a while now, the nostalgic era is making its way onto the big screen with a splashy disaster comedy directorial debut by former "SNL" cast member Kyle Mooney. Starring future Snow White Rachel Zegler, Y2K follows a group of teenage friends on New Years’ Eve 1999 who must fight off the threat of the dreaded Y2K computer glitch, which in this universe is totally real. Critics are calling the film a fun and hilarious camp masterpiece that does justice to the late-'90s and early-'00s in all their glory. While there is no official release date yet for the film, we’re already getting our butterfly clips and glitter lip gloss ready.

3. Immaculate

Sydney Sweeney has had quite the year! From her blockbuster summer romance Anyone But You to the MCU's Madame Web and even hosting "SNL", we can’t get enough of her on our screens. The good news is that she’s back with a twisty new horror film from Neon, giving us the scream queen we didn’t know we needed. Immaculate follows an American nun played by Sweeney who arrives at a seemingly peaceful convent in Italy, where things are obviously not as they seem. The transition from SXSW premiere to theater screens was swift, and the film is now in theaters for our enjoyment (or terror)!

4. "Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show"

With a recent role in Best Picture-nominated film Poor Things, Jerrod Carmichael is not one to miss. Jerrod has been one of the freshest voices on the comedy scene, giving a vulnerable, sharp, and hilarious look into himself with his 2022 HBO Comedy Special “Rothaniel”. Here to dig deeper and lift the veil on the inner workings of his life and self is Jerrod’s new docuseries, aptly titled “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show”. Look out for this show soon when it drops on HBO on March 29!

5. The Idea of You

Arguably one of the buzziest premieres at SXSW this year is this swoon-worthy rom-com starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, who’s been gifting us with non-stop films like Bottoms, Red, White, and Royal Blue, and Purple Hearts. The Idea of You, directed by Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer), follows Hathaway as a 40-year-old single mom who takes her teen daughter to Coachella and finds herself falling for the 24-year-old heartthrob lead singer of the hottest boy band. The film draws parallels to those Harry Styles fanfics we all used to (still do?) read, and promises one of the steamiest and fun releases of the year when it lands on Prime Video May 2!

6. Monkey Man

Dev Patel’s much-anticipated directorial debut was not an easy film to make, with many production roadblocks getting in the way, but the film has finally arrived with a VERY successful premiere at SXSW and the standing ovation Dev deserves. Action-thriller Monkey Man follows Dev Patel as “Kid”, an anonymous fighter in the Mumbai ring who sets out to avenge the death of his mother by bringing down the powerful group who killed her. Monkey Man is set to be released by horror king Jordan Peele’s MonkeyPaw Productions on April 5. The reaction to the film’s screening at SXSW brought Dev to tears, and we couldn’t be happier for him and more excited to see the film ourselves!

7. "3 Body Problem"

Another TV premiere to offer a palette refresher from the long list of films on our list, "3 Body Problem" screened on opening night of SXSW and made a big splash. Released on Netflix on March 21, the sci-fi series stars big names like Benedict Wong and Eiza Gonzales and follows two timelines: 1960s China and 2024 England. An alien invasion and bending science affect and influence both eras and those who live in them. We’ll keep this a spoiler-free zone and won’t reveal too much of the show’s plot, but get yourself to your favorite binge machine and press play to find out the rest! You won’t regret it.

8. Babes

One of the highest-rated and most-anticipated film premieres at this year’s festival, pregnancy comedy Babes starring Ilana Glazer ("Broad City") and Michelle Buteau ("Survival of the Thickest"). Directed by comedy goddess Pamela Adlon of “Better Things”, the film follows Glazer’s newly pregnant character who turns to her mother friend (Buteau) for support. If you were missing the strong, wacky female friendship of Ilana and Abby on "Broad City", Babes may just fill that hole. Reviews have called the film heartwarming and have compared its comedy to Bridesmaids, which is code for must-watch. We’re calling it, this film is going to be a Galentine’s Day classic!
