The 5 Scariest Moments From 'The Boogeyman'!

Have you ever been afraid that something is lurking under your bed or in your closet at night? Well, in this movie, those fears become a reality! Based on the short story of the same name written by Stephen King, The Boogeyman, starring Sophie Thatcher ("Yellowjackets"), Vivien Lyra Blair ("Obi-Wan Kenobi"), Chris Messina (Birds of Prey), and David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad), follows a family of three who are plagued by a supernatural monster that feeds off of fear and those who have trouble listening to one another. After the family loses their mother, two daughters and their grieving father are put to the test in the scariest way possible and must save themselves before it’s too late.

If you’re into horror movies like we are, or would rather read the article instead of seeing the film (totally understandable!), we have the scoop on the top five scariest moments from The Boogeyman! [Warning: Spoilers!]

1. Sawyer Looks Under The Bed

When youngest daughter Sawyer (Blair) is sleeping, she wakes to find that her closet door that her father shut earlier has cracked open. As she peers into the dark closet from her bed, she sees a figure scurry its way from inside the closet across the floor under her bed. Paralyzed by fear, Sawyer clutches her nightlight, which happens to be a glowing ball. Mustering up enough courage, Sawyer checks under her bed and finds it completely monster-free. To be sure, she rolls the glowing ball to the dark corner under her bed, only to see a face of The Boogeyman pop out and screech at her as she screams. This was a jump-scare we did not see coming, and one that had us checking under our beds for monsters later!

2. Sadie’s Bad Dream

Throughout the film, oldest daughter Sadie (Thatcher) finds herself trying to decide if the monster her sister and she are seeing is real or just a figment over their imaginations. Sadie, growing frustrated trying to deal with that at home and struggling with friends at school, finally snaps at her little sister. Telling her once and for all The Boogeyman isn’t real, she slams the door in her face. Just as she does that ,though, The Boogeyman breaks through the door and tackles Sadie to the ground, and goes down her throat. Sadie then shoots up out of bed and starts coughing like crazy, where the audience learns that she was just dreaming the last sequence of events. The entire thing left us somewhere between being relieved and terrified!

3. Sawyer Gets Attacked

Sawyer is playing her video game in a dark-lit room before she sees the reflection of The Boogeyman in the TV. Scared, she keeps the TV screen lit and lies down on the couch to hopefully remain unseen. Watching in the TV’s reflection, she hears and sees The Boogeyman look for her before walking away and slipping back into the shadows. Sawyer breathes a sigh of relief and sits up on the couch, thinking she’s safe. Then, out of nowhere, The Boogeyman rises up and grabs her, before throwing her against the TV and injuring her. This scene had us on the edge of our seats the entire time, and wishing it was a little bit brighter in that dark theatre!

4. The Boogeyman Strikes!

After her sister is put in the hospital, Sadie finally decides that she has to be the one to destroy The Boogeyman once and for all. She goes to a house where a woman named Rita Billings (Marin Ireland), whose entire family was wiped out by The Boogeyman, has a ton of candles lit and several shotguns rigged to shoot and kill The Boogeyman. Rita then grabs Sadie and ties her up, telling her she has to be the bait to lure The Boogeyman in. Fearing for her life, Sadie watches as the shotguns and Rita kill The Boogeyman. Thinking they're safe, Rita goes to untie Sadie, only for Rita to become attacked and ripped in half by The Boogeyman! Luckily, Sadie escapes, but we were holding our breath the entire time at this gory and gruesome sequence!

5. The Ending... Or Is It?

After Sawyer, Sadie, and their father Will (Messina) fight off The Boogeyman in their basement, The Boogeyman is destroyed once and for all when it’s lit on fire. The entire house also burns down, along with their mother’s things, and Sadie finally feels like she can say goodbye to her mother and let her go. In the aftermath, Sadie, Sawyer, and Will go therapy and finally talk about their mom. Feeling refreshed and like they can start a new chapter, they all walk out the door of the office into a sunny day. The doctor then calls Sadie back in for a second, and Sadie goes, only to find the voice coming from inside the coat closet. As she walks closer to investigate, the doctor appears asking Sadie is she needs anything, confirming that it wasn’t her who called Sadie back in. Sadie gasps, realizing The Boogeyman could still be with her, before shutting the cracked closet door and leaving the audience to see a black screen. Dun dun dun!
