Heartthrob Romeo Santos dominated the 2015 Billboard Latin Music Awards on Thursday night (30Apr15), winning 10 trophies, including Artist of the Year.
The Bachata King had a record-breaking 21 nominations going into the prizegiving, and claimed almost half - in addition to the top prize, he also picked up Producer of the Year and Songwriter of the Year honors, while his record Formula, Vol. 2 was named Top Latin Album and Tropical Album of the Year. Santos also took home the Best Artist trophies in the Hot Latin, Top Latin and Tropical categories.
Enrique Iglesias picked up nine wins, thanks in part to his chart-topping song Bailando with Descemer Bueno & Gente de Zona. The track earned him five prizes, including Latin Pop Song of the Year, and the star was also named Latin Pop Songs and Albums Artist of the Year
Other top awards were given to Marc Anthony, Shakira, Drake, the late Jenni Rivera and Colombian singer J. Balvin, who claimed three prizes, including New Artist of the Year.
Meanwhile, Anthony, Nicky Jam and Gente de Zona kicked off the evening of star-studded performances with a showstopping set. Alejandro Sanz, J. Balvin, Natalia Jimenez, Daddy Yankee and Belinda also played live, while Luis Fonsi teamed up with DJ Afrojack and R&B singer Ne-Yo for a surprise collaboration.
But the highlight came when Jennifer Lopez paid tribute to the late Selena Quintanilla with a medley of hits including Como La Flor, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom and I Could Fall In Love. Lopez portrayed the slain Mexican music icon in a 1997 biopic. She was joined onstage by Selena's band, The Dinos, featuring her siblings A.B. and Suzette, Selena's guitarist husband Chris Perez.
The family get together was topped off by the siblings' father, Abraham Quintanilla, Jr., who came out to thank the fans with a wave at the end of the set.
The 2015 Billboard Latin Music Awards, hosted by actors Pedro Fernandez and Gaby Espino, was held at Florida's BankUnited Center at the University of Miami.
