Niki Novak here for Young Hollywood. They've performed live in front of millions of people. They are Jennifer Lopez's backup dancers and choreographer. They have a new show called A Step Away and we're going to crash the rehearsal and I'm going to get me a dance lesson and channel my inner J-Lo. I am here with the stars of A Step Away. It's so great to be part of this. I've just, just so you guys know, I've quit Young Hollywood. I've become This is my new, this is my signature dance move.
Yes.
This is actually you right here.
That's good, that's going to be me. I'm going to be Jennifer by the end of this interview 'cause I'm going to have a dance lesson. Before I forget, let's go down the line and let's introduce ourselves. How you doing?
I'm Jon.
I'm Tara.
I'm Nicky.
I'm Sticky Nicky.
Oh, I'm Sticky Nicky. Oh. Which rhymes with Bo. There you go. There you go. Bo. But you go by Casper. Would you prefer Bo or Casper?
Bo, Casper. Bo is my real name, Casper is a nickname.
Okay.
I'm George.
And you're new on the tour. You're new on the tour. You sort of joined at the very.
I joined at the end. I came in when there was a situation. You gotta tune in and watch this week.
Oh, I saw that episode. The situation. I saw that episode. You guys got me hooked. Jimmy R old Smith and my Twitter name now is Jimmy. So you guys were on tour for a year. Now you guys got to know each other really, really well, right?
Two well.
So to kick things off, we're going to do like a little pointing game. Okay? To um, call each other out. I'm just going to say the most likely to. Person most likely to on the count of three, you guys are going to point to the person, okay? Ready? First of all, person most likely to be late for rehearsal.
Oh my God.
That was so quick.
Clearly.
You do.
No, no. This is the point.
I know, you can't argue it.
Let's just move on.
Okay, let's move on. Okay, let's move on. Who is the biggest flirt?
Why does it have to be that girl?
I was like, I already knew that was gonna happen 'cause I'm the only girl here.
No.
Jon didn't want to play. He was like, I was like, who wants to say this one?
We are nervous like, oh wait, wait.
Biggest gossip?
No, no, no, no, no. Don't hurt yourself.
That's what you did. Karma got you.
That was how was it playing? The behind, it's the behind the scenes to me that's crazy. I mean the show is obviously spectacular, but the behind the scenes, what goes on, it's great to see the sort of business side of it. So just a little bit about Jennifer and you guys sort of like the whole business part of it and how that comes into play.
I think um we're very.
You're not mic'd, Jon.
She said we can't hear you.
Well, first of all, I want to say this has never been done before. This is the first time it's ever ever been done, especially following the dancers and putting us in the light. Um, me being very passionate about the industry, I think that this is the first time you get to see what we really deal with. The the BS, the the unfairness at times and and there's a job to do and people don't know that we have full-time jobs when you with an artist and your workload is crazy and it's tiring. So I think it's very important for the dance community to see what you're signing up for before, you know, you come to the big leagues and try to dance for a star like Jennifer.
Talk to me a little bit about what it's like being on tour for a year and just sort of the craziness of it all. Who wants to take this?
Clearly me.
She's like, she's like, who wants to take it? You got it.
There's a lot of like pros and cons to it. Uh, pros is you get to travel the world. It's amazing. You get to sightsee. You get to do what you love and you're getting paid for your passion and that's your work. Um, you get to travel with people you love and and you know, become family with. Uh, the cons is traveling at the same time, living out of a suitcase. Um, people think it's super glamorous and you're in a new hotel every other night for a year.
How many show of hands, who woke up and didn't know what city they were in?
Oh my God. That was like every day.
Did you guys ever think you like overpaid for something and no one told you, you gave 'em like 100 bucks for.
All the time.
Oh what we hear?
Oh there's a little joke in that too.
Uh oh.
No, no, no, no. It's one of the episodes. You'll you'll see. It's that I I look like an idiot.
What was the biggest audience you guys had? How many thousands were in the audience?
Uh we did a an 80,000, 60,000.
Wait, say that again. 80,000?
We did like an 80,000.
But for the people who will never experience that, that looking out and having that rush. I mean even just watching your rehearsal when the music got going, I was like, and we're in a room with nobody watching. I mean that feeling to who describe.
It's indescribable when you see 20,000 people jumping up and down and doing the choreography that you know. And that's the great thing about Jennifer is that her choreography is is timeless and you can place it and you can do it and she she prides herself on that with all of her steps and with the choreographers. The movement has to has to touch the audience. And when they're doing it, when they're connecting, you you you can't even hold it. You black out. Half the time you don't even know what you did on stage. We we spent three months rehearsing. So everything becomes more habit then thinking about it. Same thing with like boxing is is you don't go in there with like a set routine and and when you box, you don't think. You know, it's all reaction. So when you're out on stage, you don't think, you just react to the music on what you know, what's already embedded in your body.
Ten dancers, five continents, 66 cities. Get it, girl.
Who else, who wants to finish the tease?
They're every Thursday. A Step Away up and we actually just got a bonus seventh episode. So make sure you get into it. And I might be in it. I'm just kidding.
Okay, so should we teach me, yes, since I'm joining the troop, should we teach me some some some moves and you can check out my skills? Easy, medium or hard. All right. Oh, they're going to help me out. They're helping me out. This is a sign of things to come. So give me a good, give me a good club move because this is my club move. You guys ready? Let me see you. Oh, yeah. You're never going to get them like that. Yeah, I think that's where you wanted to go. And I don't know where it went. Right. Then again. No, I'll go right again. Exactly. See that's easy for you.
Okay. So you go We're going to teach you um our signature on the floor and then you're going to become our Jennifer.
Okay. This is what I've been waiting for.
So you're going to jump and you're going to go one, two, three, four. Yes. Yep. So you're just going to fist pump, fist pump, fist pump, fist pump. You're going to go you're going to step out and step in and hold. Ready?
I got it. So you go. So here, look in the mirror. Oh, I have no problem doing that. And now look right when your foot touches like your sweat up on the where. You wiped it on Jon. Freaks went on Jon. From the pump. Da da da da. We're going to pop. Oh my gosh. Oh my God. Right here, sweat. Wipe your sweat. This I sweat on my Maybe Maybe she's sweating. Maybe I sweat on my neck. You never know. Okay. It's like extensions, you know? Calling me out. I'm okay. I just I'm not getting it. Uh huh. You think? I I feel like you need something more. More. There, I'm missing something. Just Oh, that feels better. You're ready. That feels better. I'm ready. All right, let's do it. One, two, three. Young Hollywood! Can I make the tour? Can I make the tour? Yes. Is Jennifer fired?
