YH: In your recent single “Fortuna”, you surprised all of us by singing not in two but in three languages: Mandarin, English and Spanish, which was awesome! Which language is your favorite to write the lyrics for?
LL: I’ve been using both Mandarin and English to write ever since my first song written 8 years ago. I enjoy the different sounds & cultural personalities in these languages and always yearning for something new, so I started to learn Spanish. I’m not so proficient in using Spanish in lyric-writing yet, but I’m looking forward to. There is no one language that’s my favorite; they all bring their own irreplaceable charm to the songs.
YH: You have been in the music industry for a while now. If you could go back, what advice would you give to young Lexie, who just started her path?
LL: Be selfish to your music.
YH: With new music coming out, should we expect a tour anytime soon?
LL: A tour would be nice!
YH: What three words would you choose to describe The Happy Star?
LL: Take a listen.
YH: Do you have a favorite song in the upcoming album? Why is it special for you?
LL: It's a song called “3.14159”. I worked on it with a German electro duo Digitalism. The song evokes a part of me that I’ve never seen.
YH: The music videos for your songs are always so interesting to watch. You manage to tell a whole story in just a few minutes, making the clips feel like a short film. How do you get the ideas for your videos?
LL: I worked with director Jeremy Z. Qin in almost every music video. He’s my best friend and often the first audience to hear my new demos right after I finish the first draft, and starts conceptualizing the video in his head at the same time. We will then brainstorm about the video and we resonate with each other a lot. He can always visualize my message in his own unique interpretation and take the listening experience to another level with the videos.
YH: One of your older songs, “Sleep Away”, was named one of the “10 Songs You Need in Your Life”. What are the top 3 songs you need in your life?
LL: "Breathe Deeper" by Tame Impala, "Found Me" by Men I Trust, "To Speak Of Solitude" by Brambles.
YH: You’ve had quite a lot of achievements for such a young age. Which one was the most memorable and important for you?
LL: The best is yet to come …
YH: Is there an artist with whom you would love to collaborate?
LL: I’d love to work with Grimes when there’s a perfect timing.
