These songs often follow a simple narrative structure — an exposition, a tense middle, and a satisfying end — and the 5 Ws (who, what, when, where, and why). Narrative music is not a new genre by any means; it’s simply been heavily associated with country, R&B, rap, and folk music since its creation. Think "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by The Charlie Daniels Band, or "Goodbye Earl" by The Chicks.
However, it seems that the genre of musical storytelling has come back into style with a more pop and indie-rock focus. This year has been ripe with opportunity for discovery, so why not start your journey into a new genre with a list of 5 phenomenal modern narrative songs that have taken the internet by storm!
"Bottle Rocket Astronaut" by Bug Hunter (2026)
Released this year by Bug Hunter, an indie-rock band with a strong focus on narrative music, "Bottle Rocket Astronaut" is an amazing example of the musical storytelling genre. The song follows Burt, an urban bird with only one working wing, as he builds soda pop rockets to take himself and other little critters to the skies. The song has recently blown up on TikTok and is the inspiration for this list. Its catchy chorus will surely have you humming all day long.
Favorite Lyrics: "I am Burt, the urban bird / I've got one wing that dudn’t work…"
"Whatever You Wanna" by Annabelle Dinda (2026)
Romance is in the air! Having recently taken the TikTok algorithm by storm, Annabelle Dinda’s "Whatever You Wanna" tells a story about intense devotion and love. The main character, possibly Dinda herself, recalls a tale of how a night of mindless fun with a romantic partner resulted in a vulnerable declaration of love. A rejection of the modern day nonchalant attitude, "Whatever You Wanna" explores romantic vulnerability and the lengths some people will go to keep their loved ones close by.
Favorite Lyrics: "I will go wherever you want me / Long-haul flights to stupid new countries / I will be whoever you dare me / Rita, Tina, Sandra, or Mary…"
"Red Flags" by Tom Cardy (2022)
Reveled in by TikTok cosplayers, actors, and animators alike for months after its official release, Tom Cardy's "Red Flags" introduces a sound of synth and pop not often seen in the musical storytelling genre. The narrative follows a fictionalized version of Cardy panicking after finding out that his date is obsessed with the film Human Centipede. He attempts to leave her but soon realizes that he may have to accept her obsession due to his love for her. The story is overly absurd and was an amazing background audio to a popular horror trend on TikTok in 2022.
Favorite Lyrics: "Why are you blinking so much? / I've got something in my eye / Here, let me get it out / No, thank you, I don't wanna die…"
"tattletale" by Kevin Atwater (2023)
While quite a lot of narrative music is fictional, there is still a plethora of non-fiction narrative songs. Kevin Atwater's "tattletale" is a perfect example. The story follows Atwater as he realizes that, not only is his friend in an inappropriate relationship with one of their high school band teachers, but that he (Atwater) must report the situation even if it means outing a fellow queer kid. The guitar-heavy number will have you tearing up as Atwater recalls such a tough time in his life.
Favorite Lyrics: "I stoppеd inside the school assigned police office / And fell apart / For two weeks they had me leave my classes early / To report what I saw…"
"Brittle Bones Nicky" by Rare Americans (2021)
Obviously, most narrative songs are fiction, but Rare Americans takes narrative music to a new level with their song "Brittle Bones Nicky" by making it a rap and rock trilogy. While a story with 3 intricate parts, "Brittle Bones Nicky" is, of course, the first and most popular, amassing around 98 million views. The narrative follows a young, scrappy, and lanky boy named Nicky after he is moved into the foster care system after the death of his mother and imprisonment of his abusive father. Nicky adopts the nickname "Brittle Bones Nicky" from his bully, who he quickly beats up. The rest of the story follows Nicky from his troubled life as a drug dealer to his death. In order to be brief and mindful of spoilers, the other two songs in the trilogy simply follow the crazy adventures of Nicky from beyond the grave!
Favorite Lyrics: "If it cost me my life, man, I'd save my only friend / That's something I could live with / I could take that 'til the end / You're not gonna push me around /You can't get me down, down, down…"
