Netflix’s new release KPop Demon Hunters is a record-breaking smash hit from Sony Pictures Animation, beating Red Notice as the most viewed movie on the streaming platform. The film follows the fictional K-Pop group HUNTR/X, who are secretly badass demon hunters. Rumi, Mira, and Zoey’s status as the biggest K-Pop group is challenged when a new group emerges, the Saja Boys, who are demons set out to take down HUNTR/X. Rumi, Mira, and Zoey have to overcome their differences in order to defeat the Saja Boys and restore balance between our world and the demon realm.

The film is a breath of fresh air for children’s animated films with an entertaining story, beautiful animation, and really catchy songs that can be enjoyed even outside of the context of the film. Along with everyone else who has watched KPop Demon Hunters, the album has been in rotation since we watched it. Today, we will be ranking HUNTR/X’s and Saja Boy’s hit songs featured in the film to determine which one is the best song!

7. "Takedown"

“Takedown” is the song the entire movie is supposedly building to. We see the songwriting process, the dynamic between HUNTR/X when creating music, and even how creative differences tear them apart. The eventual twist of it being used to reveal Rumi’s true nature instead of HUNTR/X using it to take down the Saja Boys is great for the story, but the song itself is just fine and one that doesn’t find its way into our rotation.

6. "How It’s Done"

This is the first full song in the film and our introduction to HUNTR/X. It’s paired with a really fun airplane action scene that transitions into a fight at the concert. It’s the perfect showcase of their personalities, fighting styles, as well as how confident and cocky they are when the movie begins.

5. "What It Sounds Like"

This is the climatic song HUNTR/X sings as they defeat the demon king Gwi-ma. It’s fitting for the finale and gives a great conclusion to Rumi, Mira, and Zoey’s arcs. They are able to open up to each other and overcome their differences to create a powerful ballad.

4. "Your Idol"

It’s true of every Disney Renaissance Era movie that the villain song is one of the best in the films, and it’s no different here. It’s an alluring performance, both literally and metaphorically, with the mesmerizing lyrics, dark and sleek hanbok costumes, and the visuals.

3. "Golden"

Following up “How It’s Done”, “Golden” is the audience’s emotional dive into Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. The two back-to-back create the perfect introduction to our heroines. While both are good, “Golden” comes out on top because it’s the type of song that you can release any emotions out to as you belt it in your car.

2. "Soda Pop"

Rumi was right, this song is annoyingly catchy. Doing chores, cleaning up at work, wherever we are, we can’t stop singing Saja Boy’s breakout song to ourselves. It’s perfect at encapsulating the essence of the song that plays on the radio and you can’t get it out of your head.

1. "Free"

“Free”, to us, is THE song. “Free” feels extremely personal and is a powerful cry for some sort of bond. The duet between Rumi and Jinu is a beautiful moment for these two “mortal enemies” to come together and connect over their similarities. The song captivates the listener and traps them until they realize they have listened to it 100 times in a row.
