Breaking Down Olivia Rodrigo’s New Single & Music Video “Vampire”!

She’s done it again, everyone! Olivia Rodrigo has just released her newest single, “Vampire”, and it does not disappoint! From the beautiful sounding piano and the smooth tone of her voice to angsty lyrics, “Vampire” is already on its way to be an unforgettable hit. “Vampire” is the first single released off of Rodrigo’s upcoming sophomore album, Guts. “Vampire” was entirely written by Olivia and Daniel Nigro, who also produced the song and previously won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album for producing Rodrigo’s first album, Sour. Rodrigo wrote in her Instagram post about “Vampire” that it’s one of her favorite songs off of Guts. She also stated that writing “Vampire” helped her sort through feelings of regret, anger, and heartache, and that she’s glad it’s in our hands now. Girl, so are we!

“Vampire” starts off slow, with a soft piano guiding the song as she sings about getting her heart broken and hating wanting to know how the person she’s singing about is doing at the moment. She continues on, explaining that she’s made mistakes, hitting effortless high notes and allowing the song to build up before the second verse. The bass then comes in, and the piano builds faster, adding sprinkles of effervescent-sounding background harmonies. She poses the question: “How do you lie without flinching?” After the chorus is sung a second time, the drums finally hit, and the song speeds up to a fast-paced, powerful crescendo of various instruments and lyrics. Rodrigo holds out long notes and sings each lyric with such passion and intensity that you can literally hear the pain in her voice over whoever inspired the song. Not many artists are capable of this, but Rodrigo gets it right every single time. The song ends on a few more soft piano notes, and the finishing lyrics that are the heart of the song: “Bloodsucker, fame-f*cker, bleedin’ me dry like a g*ddamn vampire..."

Rodrigo also released the music video for “Vampire” simultaneously with the single, showing her in a torn white dress and dazzling red lipstick sitting in a forest and singing her truth. As the camera zooms out, we see she’s actually performing on a set at an award show and is hit with camera equipment. Rodrigo is stunned like the rest of the audience, and is holding her arm, which is bleeding quite a bit. As the song goes on, she tries to keep singing, but the stage catches fire, and the singer finds herself surrounded by police officers, feeling trapped and like she is made to be crazy. Rodrigo then decides to make a run for it, throwing off her fancy heels and booking it away from the people around her. As the song ends, Rodrigo finds herself on a freeway, looking into the camera and finishing up singing with honesty and a genuineness that is next to perfect. Check it out below!

Not much yet is known about Guts as of this writing, but Rodrigo has revealed in a press release that she made a bulk of the album in her 19th year. The Sour singer explained that the year for her was filled with a lot of confusion, mistakes, awkwardness, and good old-fashioned teen angst.
