With a background in comedy, Eva Victor blends humor, vulnerability, and honesty in their work. It is already incredibly competitive to get your indie directorial debut into the Sundance Film Festival, but it is even harder to spark a bidding war between major distribution companies. Eva Victor’s film Sorry, Baby debuted at Sundance in 2025 and was acquired by A24 for $8 million. Since then, the actor and director has received many nominations for both the film and their acting in it, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama.

Victor was born in Paris where they spent a part of their childhood before their family moved to San Francisco. They attended an international French-speaking high school before attending Northwestern University to study acting and playwriting. They were a recurring cast member of Comedy Center Originals on YouTube, starring in humorous sketches in 2019 and 2020. They also made sketches for their personal TikTok account at that time.

Victor’s first major acting role was in the 5th season of the TV Show "Billions", and around the same time they also got cast in the film Dating in New York. Victor only fell in love with filmmaking in 2020, when they watched 100 movies they had never seen before to study how to write a film! They began seeking more acting roles and started writing Sorry, Baby, a semi-autobiographical film. Victor wrote the film in only 3 weeks while in lockdown with no one but their cat. They always imagined they would star in the lead role, but it took a 2-year journey for them to prepare to direct the film as well.

The film follows Agnes, a literature professor who is trying to rebuild her life after experiencing a traumatic event during her time in graduate school. Rather than focusing on the event itself, the story explores the complex process of healing and the importance of supportive friendships. While the subject matter is heavy, Victor uses humor as a way to help Agnes cope. Their background in comedy and their personal experiences make the film genuine, profound, and impactful. They had plenty of inspiration for writing this film, including their personal experiences and a handful of the 100 films they watched during lockdown. In 2025, they posted some of the main visual references they had when making the film:

In a conversation with fellow A24 director Celine Song, Victor mentioned that they only "need to sleep for about an hour" to then make their next movie! There is no public information released yet about any upcoming directorial projects from Victor, but they were cast in Tony Gilroy’s Behemoth! alongside Pedro Pascal and Olivia Wilde. While the release date is unknown, we can likely expect it in 2027 or 2028!

Eva Victor has had some impressive accomplishments for a first-time director. They treat heavy subject matters with care and honesty, flowing between comedy and drama. We can’t wait to see what else they will come up with!
