There are a lot of things I love in life. Two of them are World Cup football and movies. And what I’ve always found interesting is how often those two worlds actually cross paths. Here are 5 players who have appeared in both the World Cup and in movies!
Pelé
Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time -- in my opinion probably the best World Cup player ever... yes even over Lionel Messi -- Pelé made one of the most memorable transitions from sport to cinema. He starred alongside Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine in the 1981 sports war film Escape to Victory. In the movie, Pelé showcased both his acting ability and football skills, delivering one of the film's most iconic moments with an acrobatic bicycle kick. (Available on VOD/Digital)
David Beckham
Despite what many people assume, David Beckham never appeared in Bend It Like Beckham. Instead, the former England captain's most notable movie role came in Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017). Beckham played a gruff knight known as Trigger who helps guide the future king during a key scene. While it was only a small role, it marked one of the football icon's most recognizable appearances on the big screen. (Available on VOD/Digital)
Neymar
One of Brazil's modern superstars, Neymar made a brief Hollywood appearance as himself in the action-packed sequel xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017). Starring Vin Diesel, the film featured Neymar in a cameo role that delighted football fans and highlighted his global celebrity status. (Stream on Prime Video and MGM+)
Eric Cantona
After retiring from football, France's Eric Cantona built one of the most successful acting careers of any former player. His standout performance came in the acclaimed comedy-drama Looking for Eric (2009), directed by Ken Loach. In the film, Cantona plays a fictionalized version of himself, serving as a mentor and source of inspiration to a struggling fan. (Stream on Prime Video)
Zinedine Zidane
France's Zinedine Zidane appeared in Asterix at the Olympic Games and made a cameo in 2005's Goal! The Dream Begins, a football drama that featured several real life stars. While his screen roles were limited, his presence added extra appeal for football enthusiasts. (Available on Fandango at Home)
