Wonka Star on Fave Candy & Being Besties with Timothée Chalamet On Set

So, Miss Kyla Lane, the star of Wonka, the biggest movie to hit theaters for the holidays. Uh walk me through the past week, week and a half for you, as you are in full press mode.

Lots of press. That's definitely it. We had the premiere, not too long ago, a couple days ago. We had the premiere. That was fun. I saw a lot of people that I knew and it was just like, I can't believe these people are at a movie that I'm in. Like it was just crazy.

They are in your movie, and we're going to get to how you got in the movie in a second, but talk about that premiere. You looked amazing in purple. You're wearing green today. You match all of the colors of that lollipop behind you. So, uh, is that your thing, color, obviously, being on a Wonka set, you have to love color.

Yeah, definitely. I'm a big color girl and I did a lot of my press looks have color. I wanted to incorporate it incorporate that with every outfit because, I mean, Willy Wonka's all about color. I mean, as you can see. So like everything, I just want everything to be whimsical, fun, and just lots of color.

Okay, now, let's talk about this movie. You are in it with a some little Hollywood stud, Timothée Chalamet, correct? And talk to me how you got this role. Uh, they searched the globe apparently, and they found you. And then we'll get to like your first meeting with Timmy as you like to call him.

Yes. Um, I got the audition in 2020 20 2021, I think. Probably, yeah. Um, and I was 11. And um, at first it was just, you know, just a regular audition, you know, get a lot of them and it was an untitled project. It didn't say Wonka. And my name wasn't Noodle, it was Nutmeg. And Willy Wonka's name was Jimmy. So I was like, what is this? And I was like, okay, kind of skeptical, but okay. I mean, it was an untitled project, so what am I supposed to do? But then, when I got to like the third audition, I actually realized it was for Wonka. And I was like, whoa, you mean like Willy Wonka with all the colors and all this and all that. And my mom was like, well, I guess so. And um, they changed my name to Noodle. And then I did a screen test, and then I got back home and then two weeks later that's when the director called me and told me that I got the role.

Now, the director is from Paddington, so he's got a great history, but this is like your first big break in Hollywood. You've been working for a while, you're still really young, but you've been working. So now this is, this is like you're getting thrown in. I I dare say, how does it feel, but what emotions come up the fact that like you've made it in Hollywood now and you can't even drive.

Um, I don't like I'm so excited but it's like at a point where I don't know how to feel. Like I'm just I'm just here and I just I'm just so grateful, definitely.

That set must have been the most delicious set I could ever imagine. Now, we're going to get to chocolate in a minute.

Yes.

But walk me through just being on that set, how did you not just devour things because it had to be authentic?

Everything was so just beautiful and everything was actually built. Like it was crazy. And I remember walking on set and being like, thinking I was in the Wonka world. Like I thought I was in a whole another like area in the whole world. Like I was it was so crazy walking on there and just seeing everything and I remember going to the the chocolate shop scene or um, when he sings a world of your own, I remember just seeing all those different things. Like, I just want to eat this, but it's Styrofoam.

But they must have brought good stuff on set, obviously, because there was

They actually brought Yes. There was an actual chocolatier there and she created chocolates that were so, so good. And I mean, I just I want one right now. I really do.

Ooh, like what was your go-to there? Did she know your order every day already?

Well, they were um for the movie. So I never got a chance to put an actual order in, but I wish I I did.

Oh, so you didn't get to eat what she was making?

Oh, yes, I did. I did, but it it was on the sets, but I didn't make a custom order, but I probably should have though.

So then you just kept telling them the director, I need to do it again and again. How many takes were you able to have of the chocolate?

I Yes, it took her I mean, like it took her a long time to make those because they're so handcrafted and all that. So sometimes we only had like six and there was two of us, me and Timmy. So it was crazy. And so I was we had to we had to get the take in or we wasn't going to be able to get it at all.

I love how you call him Timmy. Um, it's so cute. What was it like just being on set with him because he's he's young too, not as young as you, but he's a young actor, um, quite popular. Were you starstruck? Were you just watching him in awe, taking notes? Were you guys best friends? Like, take me into like set life.

We are definitely best friends and I feel like I took a lot of notes from him just seeing him become the character Willy Wonka. But yeah, he's super fun. We were the I feel like we were the two youngest, I feel like, yeah, we were the two youngest. Of course, I was the youngest, youngest, but like I was the closest to his age than anybody else. So, yeah, we kind of vibe a lot and I had most of my scenes were with him. So, yeah, we just had a good time. We always gave each other high fives at the end of every scene. And um, yeah, we did the Thriller Dance once and he came over for Thanksgiving. And so everything was great.

Wait, he came to your family's house for Thanksgiving?

Yeah. Well, of course, yeah. Well, my family they went to England with us. So we got this huge house. And since he's only one person, he got this little small like hotel room or something. And so he was like, wow, you guys got this like huge house. I need to come and bunk with you guys. But, yeah, we my grandma she made food and everybody enjoyed it.

Well, did Timmy help out in the kitchen? Did he clean up after? Walk me through Thanksgiving dinner now. I mean, did he bring flowers, uh like cake, what did what happened?

He did not cook. But he did come and he did enjoy all of the food. And um, he had some place to go, so he kind of left a little bit early, but I mean, he enjoyed every single bit. I could tell by the look on his face when he ate it, he was like, What

What does your grandma make that's good?

She makes mac and cheese. She makes oxtails, like cabbage. I mean, she had ham, um, yams. I mean, we had pie. It was so, so good.

You guys were working with British royalty.

I mean, at first, before I even got there, I was a little bit overwhelmed cuz I didn't know what to expect being with all of these legends and great actors and actresses. But when I got there, we just became a huge Wonka family and everybody. I mean, what I thought was everybody would treat me like a little kid. Cuz that happens to me a lot, but they didn't treat me like a little kid. They cho me like they treated me like an actress, just like all of them, actors and actress.

Once I got the audition, I actually watched the actual original. So.

And what did you think? Did you

I loved it. I loved every bit of it. Some people say it's kind of scary.

I mean, I mean, like I feel like that's part of it. I feel like it's supposed to be like that.

Well, I mean, Willy Wonka has some dark themes, some uplifting themes, but when you walk out of this Wonka movie, you can't help but be joyous and happy and feel loved.

Yes. Yeah, exactly. It's a whole prequel and it's like it's just it's just so heartwarming and that's what I really love about Paul King, is he loves to make heart heartwarming movies.
