5 Stars You Might Not Know Have Famous Parents!

Written by Nathan Rubin. Published: August 12 2024

Although by no means is the entertainment biz some mom and pop business, Hollywood is a very family-oriented industry. Many of our most beloved stars come from famous or influential families — George Clooney, Zoe Kravitz, The Kardashians, the list goes on. However, there are many talents from all kinds of directions who fly more under the radar. Here is our list of some of the most sneaky rising stars who have famous families!

1. Mason Gooding

You might know Mason Gooding for his breakout indie film stardom in Booksmart or more recently for his scream king status in the two newest installments of the Scream franchise. He’s something of a teenage heartthrob and even has a new horror-comedy in development titled Heart Eyes. But did you know his father is Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. of film stardom in titles like Boyz N The Hood and Jerry Maguire? Well, now you do!

2. Oz Perkins

If you didn’t know who Osgood Perkins was at the start of this year, you surely do now. He directed the recent indie horror smash hit Longlegs, which set an impressive slew of box office records. What you probably didn’t know, though, was that his father is legendary actor Anthony Perkins, best known for his iconic role as Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. This is especially exciting given that Oz is so entrenched in the horror genre. He truly is following in his father’s footsteps.

3. Lily Collins

"Emily in Paris" is a streaming superhit, and Lily Collins is the perfect person to play its charismatic lead. We saw her on our screens before this, though, when she got her start as a child actor in films like The Blind Side. It’s impressive how much she’s been able to pave her own way for herself given that her father is legendary rock star Phil Collins, known for his '80s hits like "In The Air Tonight", "Against All Odds", and "Sussudio". We can’t wait to see what she does next.

4. Dakota Johnson

Dakota Johnson is having her moment. She’s been heavily involved in big industry projects for a long while now, but she’s just now approaching the A-list with a slew of notable new films. You might have first become familiar with her if you’re a fan of some spice, as she starred in the Fifty Shades of Gray franchise. In just the past two years, though, she starred in streaming rom-com Am I Ok?, film festival hit Daddio, and the infamous Marvel film Madame Web. Her career stands firmly on its own, but it might help that her parents are actors '80s icon Don Jonhson and Oscar-nominated actress Melanie Griffith (who is herself the daughter of actress Tippi Hedren, most known for her role in Hitchcock's The Birds). She probably wouldn’t want us talking about it, though, as she finds conversation about the subject annoying, according to existing press. Sorry, Dakota! We’re huge fans anyway.

5. Nico Parker

One of the most talented young actors on the scene right now, Nico Parker is a force to be reckoned with. She guest starred in the explosive "The Last of Us" series adaptation, where her episode was top-rated, and will be in the new installment of the How To Train Your Dragon franchise in 2025. Many don’t know, however, that her mother is Thandiwe Newton, of acting fame in projects like The Pursuit of Happyness and "Westworld". We think Nico Parker has a very bright future ahead of her, with a career that speaks for itself.
