What's up guys? Young Hollywood is in Switzerland. Yes, we have gone international to cover the Winter Youth Olympic Games here in Lausanne. Right now, I'm about to hit the ice with some curlers from Team USA.
That was so much better.
Yeah. Let's just get into this game. All right.
Sounds like a good idea. Okay. Oh, wait, sweeping. Sweeping. Sweeping. Sweeping. Okay. So, I'm going to show you guys how to sweep because Charlie's is a little bit unconventional. There's there's two ways to sweep. Uh, there's the right way, and then there's what I do. And then there's Charlie's way. All right. So basically, what you're going to do is use your broom head to cover the running surface of the rock, which is that ring that I showed you earlier. So, all of that entire circumference isn't touching the ice. All I need to do is go over that little inner circle in the middle. So I'm just going to try and cover as much as I can, as fast as I can. And then you got to be moving down the sheet at the same time. So I'm going to prepare. I hold the broom a little bit a little bit near the near the head down there, and then kind of around the middle, a little higher than the middle. And that's my sweeping position. So I'm going to walk along the rock until someone calls me to sweep, and then I right down. There you go. Exactly. So, if you're sweeping correctly, you should be able to put all your weight on the broom, and if someone were to knock the broom out from underneath me right now, I would fall flat on my face.
Wow.
So, one of us has to be closer to the rock, so that we don't bump into each other as we're sweeping. So, I'm going to let you go closer to the rock.
Okay.
The basic rule is, don't touch it. That's then it's called a burnt stone, and you have to take it out.
Got it. Cool.
So, why don't Charlie, you go ahead and throw it, and I'll sweep it down the sheet for you.
Perfect.
So I'm going to position myself right around this line. This is called the T line. It bisects the house. And I'm going to just get ready for him to throw. I'm not going to get in his way or anything like that. All right. Sweep, sweep, sweep! Hard, hard, hard! Get it over. Hurry hard! Hurry hard! Hurry hard! Yes! Oh, so close. Wait. Not quite. It's got to get fully over the red line.
It took everything out of me.
I know. It's tough. Okay, so I know we don't have full teams to play a full game, but why don't we just throw some rocks and see what I've learned.
Sounds good. Sounds good. I'm excited. Let's do it. Okay. All right. Hurry hard! Sweep! Hard! Sweep! Hurry! All the way hard! All the way! Good sweep. Good sweep. Good rock. So, do you guys have a mantra when you're out on the ice to get you psyched up?
I don't really, but Charlie, do you? I just kind of go on autopilot. I feel. I always curl better when there's absolutely nothing going through my head. So.
Okay, go, Team USA, go. Go, Team USA. Nice. Nice. Sweep, sweep, sweep! Go! Hurry up! Hurry! Hurry! Sweep! Sweep! Go! Go! Go! Good. Good rock. It really is. Sweep! Hurry! Hurry hard! Hurry! Right. Woah. Stop. Stop. It looks good. Looks good. It's a little quick. It's a little quick. Stop, stop, stop. Stop! Yay! We got one in. Nice shot.
This would be a point. If this was the end, if all 16 rocks were thrown, and this was the only one in the house, we got a point.
Yes. Wait, can you break down the point system for me?
Of course. So, you get as many points as rocks that are closer than the next opponent's rock. So, a little complicated. Basically, if we have a yellow close to the house, or close to the button, which is the center. And then we have a red one that's the next closest. Yellow is the only one who scores. Okay. Yellow gets one point.
Got it.
If there's a red closer, red gets one. Next closest is a yellow, so it stops. Scoring stops, one red. If both of these were closer than the yellow, two red.
Okay. That's it. What does this have to look like for us to win right now?
Uh, it depends on what color we are. We're red. We're red. What is it? You're feeling pretty happy right now. This is looking good for red.
And is this a winning a winning picture?
It'd be a winning picture if that were the last rock thrown, I'll tell you that. Uh, the thing about curling, which is so what makes it so difficult, is everything can change after every shot. So, this may be what the house looks like right now, but the next shot, both of these could be gone, and yellow could be like right here, and then you'd be really happy if you're yellow. Anything can happen in curling.
Well, you know what? I'm going to pretend that's the last shot. I'm going to pretend we're red. We won. Team USA. Yay!
