2025 SAG Awards Recap -- And What It Could Mean For The Oscars Race!

In the weeks since the Golden Globes, the Oscars race has heated up significantly, and with only a week until the Academy Awards mark the zenith of Awards Season, the SAG Awards provided one final look at how the Big Night could shake out. To put it succinctly -- it's anyone's game now!
While the Globes cemented many frontrunners, several of those are now no done deal. This is most true in the Lead acting categories.
But first things first -- the SAG Awards also marked the end of Television's Awards Season, with one last chance for the best of the 2024-25 TV season to make their mark and collect some (or more) accolades. To that end, "Shogun" wrapped up its powerhouse run by once again sweeping the Drama Series categories, while Jean Smart and Jessica Gunning added more hardware to their collections, plus Colin Farrell took it home for his work in "The Penguin". History was also made last night when an actual comedian won Best Actor in a Comedy Series! Yes, it's true, Martin Short finally got his flowers for "Only Murders In The Building", and the cast won for Best Ensemble! Fancy that!
Now, back to films -- the Best Supporting categories are pretty much wrapped up at this point, with Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldaña remaining undefeated this Awards Season. Timothée Chalamet made his first big splash this season, pulling out a surprising(?) win for his role in A Complete Unknown, upsetting frontrunner Adrien Brody. Now, this does not necessarily put him in position for the Oscar (Brody is still the favorite), but it is an interesting development. But the category we'll really be watching with bated breath at the Oscars is Best Actress. After a strong start to the season, winning the Golden Globe for Lead Actress in a Comedy/Musical Film, Demi Moore seemed to cement her place as the frontrunner, also winning the Critics Choice Award. However, in recent weeks, Anora star Mikey Madison has come out swinging, winning the Independent Spirit Award for Lead Actor (which is gender neutral, meaning she beat out even Best Actor frontrunner Adrien Brody) and the BAFTA. Last night, Demi Moore broke the proverbial tie by taking home the SAG Award for Best Actress in a Film, putting her back in the frontrunner position but only by a hair. So it'll definitely be interesting to see how that result shakes out next Sunday!
The last award of the night, Best Ensemble in a Film, went to Conclave -- how will that affect the Oscars? Well, probably not too much. Though Conclave has had a decent run this season, it's mostly been in the screenwriting categories (it did win Best Film at the BAFTAs). Judging by the season as a whole, Anora looks to be the film to beat, winning Best Picture and Best Director at the Indie Spirit Awards, Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards and PGA Awards, Best Director at the DGA Awards, and Best Original Screenplay at the WGA Awards. So, while The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez are still in the conversation, their initial joint wins at the Golden Globes feel kind of like a distant memory... But anything can happen! Watch this space!
