Caution – hot new movie alert! It feels like this weekend everyone was -- and continues to be -- buzzing about Ryan Coogler's newest hit movie Sinners. It just premiered last Friday but is already the talk of the town and a fan favorite, and is poised to be one of, if not THE, movies of the year!
First things first: What is Sinners about? (Don’t worry, no spoilers here!) Sinners is a period horror movie taking place in the 1930s about identical twin brothers, Smoke and Stack Moore, who return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta after years of working for the mob boss Al Capone. Once they reach the South, Smoke and Stack want to open a juke joint for the Black community, only to find that it draws in something else … vampires!
But the plot isn’t the only thing delivering, because the cast is absolutely incredible. Michael B. Jordan stars as both Smoke and Stack – yes, you read that right, we’re getting double the Jordan power! Joining him is Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Mary, Stack’s ex-girlfriend. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, you find out that Miles Caton and Jack O’Connell are also part of the team. Damn!
Sinners is written and directed by Ryan Coogler, the renowned director of Black Panther and Creed, so Sinners has no choice but to be good... And the critics agree! The movie currently holds a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.2/10 on IMDb. But it doesn’t stop there. CinemaScore gave the movie an “A” rating – the highest rating for a horror movie in 35 years! Movie critic Peter Travers writes: “Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler team for their best and most daring work yet, […] that’s divisive, dangerous, and primed to explode. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen and the best movie of this young year.”
But it’s not just the critics who love Sinners. The movie has gotten incredible word-of-mouth hype, with people telling their friends this is a must-see movie. Even celebrities have been raving about the film. Pedro Pascal posted on his Instagram, “Shut the f*** up and go see this movie”, dedicating a whole post to Sinners – and he's not even in it!
And the box office reflects that. It grossed over $63 million globally on its opening weekend alone and the numbers are only going up. What an impressive start, especially considering that Sinners is an original, R-rated horror film. In fact, it is the biggest debut for an original film since Jordan Peele’s Us in 2019, which opened with $71 million.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your tickets (if you can!) and catch Sinners in theaters this weekend – you don’t want to miss it!
