Not all love triangles are created equal.

Some are a slight inconvenience in the way of the main couple, others have destroyed entire fandoms. So, here’s a definitive ranking of Film & TV love triangles — not by who ends up together but by how much emotional damage they cause along the way!

Elena, Stefan, & Damon — "The Vampire Diaries"

It’s impossible to talk about love triangles without mentioning "The Vampire Diaries". Elena is forever trapped between Stefan, the gentle, brooding moral compass, and Damon, the chaotic older brother, for almost the entire 8-season series. Every one of Elena’s decisions feels like life-or-death; every romantic moment heightened to near-theatrical levels, and the entire time both Stefan and Damon are kept at relatively equal romantic options.

Betty, Archie, & Veronica — "Riverdale"

Obviously this love triangle is iconic and certainly chaotic; however, as we all know, it only lasts for the first season and the unpredictability of the rest of the series just adds to the chaos. Possibly the most chaotic part about their love triangle is that it is resolved in the end with one big polyamorous relationship which is definitely a very decisive way to wrap up a decade-old love triangle.

Jane, Michael, & Rafael — "Jane the Virgin"

Jane finds herself caught between Michael, the steady, heartfelt "safe choice", and Rafael, the emotionally complicated, very attractive owner of the hotel where she works (and coincidentally the father of her artificially inseminated child). What starts as a "who will she choose?" situation becomes something far more layered about timing, grief, identity, and how love changes when life refuses to stay still. Just when you think it’s resolved, the love triangle between these three comes back again in full force, telenovela style.

Nora, Hae Sung, & Arthur — Past Lives

This is the most devastating love triangle on our list by a long shot. Nora is torn between Hae Sung, her childhood connection and "what could have been", and Arthur, her present-day partner who represents the life she has actively chosen. There are no dramatic arguments and no one is the definitive "villain" of the story — just the unbearable weight of timing. What makes this triangle so powerful is that nothing dramatic happens, and yet everything is emotionally loaded, making the viewers question their own values of who the "right" person is for Nora.

Tashi, Art, & Patrick — Challengers

There is absolutely no way Challengers wouldn’t be number one on this list. Tashi sits at the center of everything, with Art and Patrick orbiting her in a dynamic built on ambition that leans into obsession at times. Challengers is so chaotic because of how fluid the power shifts are. Desire becomes strategy, attraction becomes leverage, and every interaction feels like it’s part of a much longer game that no one is fully in control of.
