How The Irish Took Over Hollywood In 2024 (With No Signs Of Slowing Down)!

Written by Ada C. Rahola. Published: December 30 2024

They star in great films, win awards, become viral phenomena, and are on everyone's lips. They are the Irish, the new conquerors of Hollywood. Not only because Cillian Murphy is the absolute king -- winning all the possible awards of 2024, from the Oscar and BAFTA to the Golden Globe and the SAG, and a long list of awards for Oppenheimer, nor for having given a stellar performance in the role of priest Bill Furlong, who discovers an obscure secret in the Catholic institution the Magdalene Laundries in the recent film Small Things Like These -- as well as screen veteran Colin Farrell, who is currently sitting pretty with a Golden Globe nomination for his transformative performance in HBO's "The Penguin", but in their wake, many other young, emerging Irish talents have conquered cinema this year. From Nicola Coughlan, Andrew Scott, and Paul Mescal to Barry Keoghan, Saoirse Ronan, and Daryl McCormack, the Irish accent has completely seduced the screen.

The reasons for this Irish domination are as diverse as the opinions about them. From considering Irish actors to be very good-looking and charming to talking about the great literary moment or the importance or the strength of their country's cinematic tradition that is now experiencing a great moment, as Saoirse Ronan states in an interview with France 24.

Elle Magazine already made it official this Summer with a strong headline: "It's Officially Hot Irish Guy Summer", but it wasn't just a Summer. The Irish actors have conquered all of 2024. The first major assault was the third season of "Bridgerton", which premiered in May, with an extraordinary Nicola Coughlan playing Penelope Hetherington (AKA Lady Whistedown). The central love story between her character and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) has been a massive success in viewership numbers and economic gains. At this moment of great popularity, the actress was also chosen to star in the legendary "Doctor Who Christmas Special", which is this year titled "Joy the World", now streaming on Disney+.

And if Coughlan triumphed in love, Daryl McCormack did it by chasing storms in his disaster film Twisters and in the second season of Apple TV+'s "Bad Sisters". A BAFTA winner for sex comedy-drama Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, McCormack has also been highly praised for his role as a young and ambitious writer in The Lesson.

In the list of Irish stars, the duo of Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal cannot be left out. The twosome accumulated success in the 2023 tragic queer drama All of Us Strangers., which earned Scott a Golden Globe nomination and Mescal a BAFTA nom.

Following this foray as a couple, both Scott and Mescal have had a splendid year solo -- Scott with the Netflix series "Ripley", and Mescal starring in Ridley Scott's epic Gladiator 2 as well as making his hosting debut on "Saturday Night Live" earlier this month.

From these two Irish creative talents to another Irishman on his way to global stardom is Barry Keoghan, who has once again given a masterful performance, this time as a drug-dealing and chaotic father in the magical realism film Bird. And, of course, an Irish actress who, like her fellow citizens, keeps receiving great praise, Saoirse Ronan has added two great films to her filmography: the historical war drama Blitz, directed by Steve McQueen, and The Outrun, where Ronan gives one of the best performances of her career.

They are young, have shown great interpretative talent, and are on the radar of all the great directors. They are the Irish, determined to conquer Hollywood, and they have succeeded: they've got us in love! Erin go bragh forever!
