Attention, TV lovers -- Awards Season is creeping upon us once again thanks to the Emmy Award nominations announced this morning!

The biggest story of the day has to be the sheer dominance of FX this year, with the network racking up its most nominations ever in a single year…

FX’s “The Bear” continues to insist it’s a “comedy” and in doing so has managed to break the record for nominations in the Comedy categories this year with 23, surpassing the previous record-holder (and actual comedy) “30 Rock”. The series has at least one entry in every major Comedy Series category, including, of course, Best Drama Series, and nods for its lead actors Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri and supporting actors Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce, and Liza Colón-Zayas (White, Edebiri, and Moss-Bachrach all won the Emmy in these categories last year).

But “The Bear” is not the only FX series getting some love in the Comedy categories – after 3 outstanding yet criminally underrated seaons, Taika Waititi’s “Reservation Dogs” has finally been recognized in the Best Comedy Series category along with its lead actor D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai. Likewise, “What We Do In The Shadows” (also a Waititi-produced series) picks up its 3rd Best Comedy Series nom and its first-ever acting nod (Matt Berry for Lead Actor).

Meanwhile, in the Drama categories, as expected, FX’s epic historical drama “Shogun” dominated with 25 total nominations (which is basically, like, every Drama Series category), including Best Drama Series and nods for it’s incredible lead actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai and supporting actors Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira. The series only the second non-English language show to be nominated for Best Drama Series (after “Squid Game”). Fun Fact: the first television adaptation of “Shogun” in 1980 (from NBC) received 12 Emmy nominations and ended up winning for Best Limited Series!

Over in the Limited Series categories, the latest seasons of “True Detective”, “Fargo”, and “Feud” are all over the lists this year, with the first 2 nabbing Best Limited Series nods. “Fargo” also landed nominations for actors Jon Hamm and Juno Temple (with Sam Spruell sadly being left off the supporting actor lists), while “True Detective: Night Country” garnered nods for stars Jodie Foster, John Hawkes, and Kali Reis. “Feud: Capote vs The Swans”, meanwhile, was recognized for the outstanding performances by Tom Hollander, Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, and a posthumous nod for Treat Williams.

For the record, “Only Murders In the Building” is a Hulu original and not under the FX umbrella – though, if it were, it would only add to FX’s impressive output this year, as the series is up for 6 awards, including Best Comedy Series, Lead Actor nods for Steve Martin and Martin Short, and a long overdue Lead Actress nomination for Selena Gomez! Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep were also nominated in the Supporting categories – a first for Rudd and Streep’s fifth (she’s previously won 3).

Elsewhere in TV Land, HBO’s “The Gilded Age” FINALLY got some love this year, with the historical drama being recognized for Best Drama Series plus very well-deserved nods for Lead Actress (Carrie Coon) and Supporting Actress (Christine Baranski). I, for one, am very glad to see the Academy has stopped sleeping on this series!

This year is also a big one for Indigenous actors! Lily Gladstone – who was robbed at the Oscars earlier this year (yeah, I said it!) – is the sole nominee for Hulu’s limited true crime series “Under The Bridge”. With this nomination, she and fellow nominee in this category Kali Reis (from “True Detective”), have incredibly become the first Indigenous women ever nominated for acting Emmys! In addition to this, the aforementioned D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (from “Reservation Dogs”) is the first Indigenous lead acting Emmy nominee ever!

To no one's surprise, Richard Gadd’s breakout hit “Baby Reindeer” for Netflix racked up an amazing 11 nominations this year, including nods for Gadd himself in the lead actor, directing, and writing categories. His captivating co-star Jessica Gunning also landed a much-deserved Supporting Actress nod, along with other fellow castmembers Tom Goodman-Hill and Nava Mau (who becomes the first transgendered Latina women nominated in this category).

Other first-time nominees this year include Robert Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, both of whom are still basking in the glow of their Awards Season dominance from last year including Oscar wins for their roles in Oppenheimer and The Holdovers, respectively. Thanks to RDJ’s supporting role in HBO’s “The Sympathizer” and DJR’s guest appearance in “Only Murders In The Building”, Awards Season is not done with them yet!

Other tidbits of note…

Prime Video’s video game adaptation “Fallout” eked its way into the Best Drama Series category and also earned a Best Lead Actor nod for star Walton Goggins (his second nomination ever).

Netflix’s “The Crown” is going out with a bang this year, as its final season racked up 18 nominations including Best Drama Series and acting nominations for pretty much its entire cast, including Imelda Staunton (as Queen Elizabeth), Dominic West (as Prince Charles), Elizabeth Debicki (as Princess Diana), Jonathan Pryce (as Prince Philip). Claire Foy even picked up a Guest Actress nod for reprising her role as young Elizabeth in the final season.

Sofia Vergara’s foray into drama landed her a well-deserved Best Actress In a Limited Series nomination for her performance in the Netflix’s true crime drama “Griselda”.

Some notable omissions from the nominations this year include Hulu’s “We Were The Lucky Ones”, Apple TV’s “Manhunt”, HBO’s “The Regime”, CBS’s “Ghosts” and “The Walking Dead” spinoff “The Ones Who Live”. AMC’s “Interview With The Vampire” just missed the eligibility cutoff this year but I fully expect it to dominate next year’s nominations… OR ELSE.
