Everything We Know So Far About 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'!

Written by Cameron Long. Published: August 02 2025

We’re so back.

In less than a year, we’ll be swinging through the streets of New York City once again with everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters next July. And trust us, there are some rumors floating around that’ll have your Spidey senses tingling. Let’s break down every character – confirmed or rumored – and explore the possible plot points their involvement might bring.

Confirmed: New Costume

On Friday morning (August 1), Marvel dropped an 8-second micro teaser that appears to hint at a wardrobe change for Spidey. New era, new look!

Then on Saturday (August 2), Tom Holland himself did Marvel one better by posting a video of himself in the new Spidey fit on Instagram, as well as some other behind-the-scenes goodies as filming gets underway!

Confirmed: Mary Jane Watson

If you remember the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, you’ll recall that Doctor Strange cast an irreversible spell, one that made everyone forget Peter Parker… including his high school sweetheart, Mary Jane, played by Tom Holland’s real-life girlfriend, Zendaya. It was a heartbreaking moment, not just for Peter, but for all of us watching. So while Zendaya’s return as the sharp-witted MJ might not be a total shock, it is a welcome one. We’re more than ready to see their spark reignite.

Confirmed: Ned Leeds

The guy in the chair is back (IYKYK). That’s right, our favorite LEGO-building, comic relief sidekick is returning in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While it’s still unclear how big a role Jacob Batalon’s character will have — especially since he, too, forgot Peter exists, and his past contributions were mostly helping with all the web-slinging antics — we’re still thrilled to see him back. And maybe even a little more sling-ring magic action. Either way, we’re just glad to have him back.

Confirmed: The Punisher

Words can’t even begin to capture the excitement I feel to report that The Punisher is joining Peter Parker on the streets of New York! Jon Bernthal was born for this role, and if the tone follows what we saw in the Netflix series, we are in for a real treat.  This also supports what Kevin Feigementioned during a roundtable interview in Los Angeles, that the next chapter will center on Spider-Man “by himself, dedicated to saving the city, and dealing with – for a lack of a better term – street-level crime, as opposed to world-ending events that he faced when working with other characters.” And honestly, that sounds great to me. As fun as No Way Home was, the lifelong Spider-Man fan in me is over the moon about the potential for a more grounded story, and The Punisher feels like the perfect character to make that happen.

Confirmed: Sadie Sink Mystery Role

Sadie Sink has effortlessly captivated audiences with her standout performances. She broke onto the scene as the wise-beyond-her-years Max Mayfield in "Stranger Things", held her own alongside Dylan O’Brien in Taylor Swift’s "All Too Well" short film, and most recently took to Broadway, starring as Shelby Holcomb in John Proctor is the Villain. And now? It might be time for her to suit up.

Well, maybe. We actually don’t know who she will be playing yet, which, of course, has people buzzing about the possibilities. Some speculate she’ll take on the iconic role of Gwen Stacy, a popular choice that wouldn’t be far-fetched. But if you ask me, she might be an even better fit for Carlie Cooper, a CSI forensics expert and one of Peter’s early romantic interests in the One More Day comic arc. But, superpowered or not, we can’t wait to see one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars join Tom Holland in this beloved universe.

Confirmed: Bruce Banner

Hold onto your hats, Hulk fans, because this news is almost too much to bear. For the past month, rumors have swirled about the Hulk making an appearance in the film. Now, it’s officially confirmed: he’s back in the MCU and apparently will be squaring off against both Punisher and Spider-Man before the real villains step into the narrative!

To some eagle-eyed fans, this doesn’t come as a complete surprise, as some had already uncovered a public Pinterest board belonging to Brand New Day’s director of photography, Brett Pawlak, and inside that (now-deleted) board were a couple of images of Spider-Man fighting Savage Hulk.

Rumored: Mr. Negative

Not only has Spider-Man been dominating the box office, but he’s also made a significant impact on the world of video games, thanks to the recent success of Insomniac’s story-driven titles. One standout antagonist from these games has been Mr. Negative, a Chinese crime lord with the power to corrupt and control others through a dark energy called the “Negative Touch.”

Like Hulk, his appearance in the upcoming film hasn’t been confirmed (officially). But it might be time to start getting your hopes up, because, thanks to some recent set photos, we were able to spot some military vehicles marked with the Inner Demons logo –t he crime gang Mr. Negative leads.

Rumored: Scorpion

Nearly every major Spider-Man villain has made it to the big screen, but Scorpion is not among them... At least, not quite. His only appearance so far was a brief end-credits scene in Spider-Man: Homecoming, where Michael Mando’s Scorpion talks with Michael Keaton’s Vulture in prison, plotting to take down the web-head in quite a gruesome way.

So yeah, this guy isn’t messing around, and since he’s already been introduced in the franchise, it feels like a safe bet he’ll be crawling his way into the next film. And real fans know, if he’s rocking that iconic metallic green suit from the Insomniac games, it’s game over (in the best way possible).

Rumored: Tarantula, Tombstone, and Boomerang

There are so many potential villains who could appear in this film that this list could easily turn into a novella if we’re not careful. But this week, a fresh leak added some serious excitement. Ziyi Cao, assistant to director Destin Daniel Cretton, posted a photo on social media showing multiple Spider-Man comic covers plastered on the walls of Cretton’s office. Among them were covers featuring villains like Tarantula, Tombstone, and Boomerang. This is especially intriguing in light of Kevin Feige’s recent comments at the previously mentioned roundtable, where he revealed that Cretton has “eight or nine comic covers up on his wall in his art department that he is bringing to life in this movie.”

So, it’s safe to say these comic covers could offer a sneak peek at specific scenes and villains we’ll see in the film. However, since these characters are lower-tiered villains for Spider-Man, I don’t think they will be leading the central conflict. Instead, much like Fantastic Four: Next Step’s opening sequence, I think we might get a quick montage showcasing Spider-Man cleaning up the streets and taking down these villains as a way to set the tone of the film and show us how Peter is adapting to his new life as a crime-fighting hero.

And so, with a vault of dynamic and formidable characters to pull from, the potential for this next Spider-Man film is off the charts. And no matter which villain you’re hoping to see Peter face off against, or team up with, one thing is sure: we trust the gem, the national treasure that is Tom Holland. In a recent interview on the Rich Roll Podcast, Holland shared that he had just read a draft of the script, saying, “It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job. I read it three weeks ago, and it really lit a fire in me. Zendaya and I sat down, read it together, and we at times were bouncing around the living room.”

We don’t know about you, but that’s music to our ears. Just the thought of Tom and Zendaya reacting that strongly to a new Spider-Man script has us more excited than ever for what’s coming!
