The internet was set ablaze, as the announcement seemingly appeared out of nowhere. Most "ADW" fans are excited for what the new show may bring. Others, however, have been a bit more pessimistic, citing that the reboot will never do the original series justice. Well, in an attempt to dispel some of this negativity, here is everything the "A Different World" reboot has already gotten right so far!
When "A Different World" originally premiered in 1987 on NBC, it was a spin-off of "The Cosby Show". The first season was centered on Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) as she adjusted to her newfound independence and life away from home as she entered her sophomore year of college at Hillman — a fictional HBCU — in Virginia. While the first season was good, the second season would be a game-changing hit.
After Season 1, Lisa Bonet left "ADW" to have her child with Lenny Kravitz and eventually returned to "The Cosby Show". A new director, the wonderfully talented Debbie Allen, was appointed, and Jasmine Guy became the new lead as Whitley Gilbert, an eccentric and high-fashion Southern belle. The rest of the ensemble was rounded out with math whiz Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), Ron Johnson (Darryl M. Bell), Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor (Dawnn Lewis), Freddie Brooks (Cree Summer), and Kimberly Reese (Charnele Brown). The second season was focused on tackling topics such as racism, AIDS awareness, domestic violence, and the real campus energy and traditions of an HBCU. And, of course, there was still romance and an immense amount of drama. The show went on for an additional 4 seasons (all of which you can binge now on Netflix before the reboot premieres!).
You can rest assured that the "A Different World" reboot will be in amazing hands, as Debbie Allen returns to not only guest star in the show but to direct 3 episodes out of the 10-episode season, including the pilot premiere. She will also be serving as an executive producer. With Debbie at the helm, there is no way that the "ADW" reboot will stray too far from its original roots.
To make matters even better, Felicia Pride ("Grey’s Anatomy", "Bel-Air") will be serving as the showrunner and executive producer of the new series. Writers on the original series, Reggie Rocke Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood, will be returning to the series as executive producers as well, so we already know that the script of the new reboot will not only be up to date but still retain some of the flair that made the original production so special.
Thankfully, it seems like everyone in the world is excited about the "A Different World" reboot, including the cast. Not only are multiple actors from the original production returning to the reboot, but the new main cast are all people who grew up watching the original show. The love they have for the production is immense, and all of them are excited to bring "A Different World" into a new era.
The fantastic new main cast of the "ADW" reboot includes Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah, an impulsive and rebellious young woman attempting to forage her own path. Alijah Kai will be playing Rashida, the incredibly intelligent and secretly nerdy roommate of Deborah who is honed in on her education. Cornell Young IV plays Shaquille, the son of Ron Johnson, star quarterback, and potential love interest for Deborah. Jordan Aaron Hall will be playing Amir, a psychology major with a past in juvenile detention. Kennedi Reece is Hazel, a God-fearing pastor’s daughter who attempts to balance her faith and her want for freedom. And lastly, Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion merchandising student trying to explore his emotions through design.
For those looking for a familiar face, Jasmine Guy will be returning, as well as Kadeem Hardison, Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Dawnn Lewis, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James, and many more. It’s not often that you see a reboot with this many returning actors, but that’s how you know that "ADW" reboot is a project of love and legacy.
In the trailer for the "A Different World" sequel, you find out that Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter/child of Dwayne and Whitley, is entering her freshman year at Hillman College with an intense amount of pressure from her parents to succeed. Deborah, however, is a free-spirited and rebellious young woman as she attempts to escape her parents' shadow and build her own legacy at Hillman while, of course, having the time of her life with her new best friends and possibly finding true love. While Deborah is the main character of the new reboot, her friends will also have their own important storylines about finding their true selves at Hillman — just like the original.
The creative team and cast of this production don’t often refer to the "A Different World" reboot as a reboot. Instead they detail it as a continuation of the original storyline, a chance to bring "ADW" into the modern day while staying true to the activism and heart of the original production. For anyone worrying that the reboot will somehow besmirch the original, there is a whole crew and cast trying their best to keep that from happening. The "A Different World" reboot is not a quick cash-grab but rather a love letter to a new generation from an older one.
