The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time and Fun Home were the toast of Broadway on Sunday (07Jun15) as they each picked up five honors at the 2015 Tony Awards.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time swept the board in all but one of the six categories it was nominated for, scoring Best Play, Best Leading Actor in a Play for Alex Sharp, and Best Direction of a Play for Marianne Elliott, in addition to Best Scenic Design of a Play and Best Lighting Design of a Play.
Fun Home, which was tied with An American In Paris for the most nominations with 12, made Tony Awards history when composer Jeanine Tesori and lyricist Lisa Kron landed the Best Original Score honor, making them the first all-female songwriting team to earn the prize.
The show also won the coveted Best Musical title, while Michael Cerveris scored Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Kron scooped Best Book of a Musical, and Best Direction of a Musical went to Sam Gold.
An American In Paris ended the night with four awards, including Best Orchestrations and Best Choreography.
Peter Morgan's royal play The Audience was an early double winner at New York's Radio City Music Hall ceremony after Oscar winner Dame Helen Mirren picked up the very first award of the night, for Best Leading Actress in a Play, for her role as Queen Elizabeth II, while her co-star Richard McCabe followed closely behind as he was named Best Featured Actor in a Play for his portrayal of former British Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
The King and I was also a two-time winner, with Kelli O'Hara emerging victorious in her sixth Tony nomination for Best Leading Actress in a Musical.
Broadway regulars Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth served as the night's co-hosts, while guest presenters included Jennifer Lopez, Neil Patrick Harris, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Nick Jonas and Seinfeld stars Larry David and Jason Alexander.
Casts from each of the Best Musical contenders - An American in Paris, Fun Home, Something Rotten! and The Visit - treated viewers to song and dance numbers, while stars from Gigi, Chenoweth's On the Twentieth Century and Finding Neverland also hit the stage to perform, as did Josh Groban, who honored Broadway's late stars during the In Memoriam tribute.
