Lady Gaga's male alter ego Jo Calderone sparked security issues backstage at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (28Aug11) - because no one recognized the pop superstar when she tried to enter pal Beyonce's dressing room.
The Crazy In Love hitmaker used Sunday's (28Aug11) ceremony to announce the news she's expecting her first child with husband Jay-Z and Gaga couldn't wait to congratulate her Telephone collaborator herself as they both prepared to perform at the big event.
But security guards failed to recognize Gaga as Calderone and initially blocked her from visiting her pregnant pal.
An eyewitness tells UsMagazine.com, "She kept coming over to rub Beyonce's belly and say hello. And the security guards thought she was a guy at first and wouldn't let her back! It was really funny."
Paying tribute to mum-to-be Beyonce while presenting onstage at the VMAs, Gaga called the superstar "a beautiful soul".
