"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed animated shows of all time. The show’s extremely original premise, captivating character arcs, and stunning animation made it an instant classic which transcended the network it debuted on. It is hard to believe that "Avatar" began as a simple Nickelodeon cartoon because people of all ages have grown to love it.

Despite all of this, the upcoming film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender has received surprisingly little marketing. As a result, this movie has almost no social media presence, and many people don't even know it exists, let alone that it starts streaming on July 25. Why would Paramount pour so much money into funding a film's production and then release it so unceremoniously?

This is the full timeline of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender’s somewhat tricky production and how such an anticipated film ended up quietly pushed onto streaming.

Pre-Production

In 2020, both "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "The Legend of Korra" were released to Netflix and were met with a major boom in popularity. The resurgence of success led Nickelodeon to reconnect with the series’ creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. In 2021, Nickelodeon announced the formation of Avatar Studios, along with a theatrical film that would later become Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. DiMartino and Koneitzko would be heavily involved in the creation of the movie and the larger Avatar Studios as a whole. This is a prominent distinction, because the creators had previously stepped away from the live-action "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series due to creative differences, which proved to be detrimental to the series.

Production

Although DiMartino and Konietzko created concepts for the film, the final script was written by Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost. Production began in 2021, and Lauren Montgomery, a storyboard artist from "Korra", was set to direct. Plot details revealed that the film would focus on the original gang in their early-20s, which caused fan excitement to skyrocket. In 2024, it was announced that the cast would be made up of an entirely new voice cast, with Dave Bautista playing an unnamed antagonist. In 2025, Steven Yeun joined the cast as the new voice of fan-favorite Zuko. Reportedly the final cut of the film was done by 2026, but the release would prove to be much more convoluted than anyone could imagine.

The Leak

In December 2025, it was announced that Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender would completely skip its theatrical release and go straight to streaming on Paramount+ on October 9, 2026. Fans were outraged because this was potentially the only chance they had to see beautifully animated bending on the big screen. Regardless of the pushback, Nickelodeon was likely preparing for a major marketing push, but all of that planning quickly came crashing down. On April 12, major portions of the film were leaked on X, which revealed pivotal scenes of the villain interacting with Team Avatar. By April 13, reportedly the entire film had been leaked in high quality. Avatar fans were thrilled with the quality of the animation and implored Paramount+ to give the film its theatrical release back. Meanwhile, the cast and crew were livid because the unauthorized release disrespected the years of hard work they poured into the project. After already being robbed of a proper theatrical release, the creative team was once again having their moment stolen. Micheala Jill Murphy, the original voice of Toph, posted a message on social media which pleaded with fans to not share images of the leak to preserve some magic for the official release. On July 7, Paramount, seemingly tired of all the controversy, announced that the film would be coming to streaming on July 25.

As of July 9, the official trailer for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender dropped, and it looks beautiful. It is a true shame that this film was deprived of its moment in the limelight. The Avatar fans are extremely dedicated, and they have been yearning for a new animated project for years. Some fans are still holding out hope that there will be some form of theatrical release, but Paramount seems preoccupied with identifying the person responsible for the leak.

Despite the endless troubles this production has faced, we are still excited to revisit Team Avatar as they encounter a new threat that changes the status quo!
