As I was scrolling through my laptop the other day trying to find a show to watch, I noticed one thing – there are a lot of medical shows out there. But why? Sure, the genre is interesting, and the drama pulls you in, but do we really need that many variations? Aren’t they all the same? As the questions started to build up, I decided to do my research to find out what makes each medical TV drama different. So, here’s a list of all the top medical dramas and what makes each one unique!

1. "Grey’s Anatomy" (2005-present)

We’re starting with arguably one of the most famous medical dramas. Throughout 21 seasons (with Season 22 premiering on October 9), the show follows Dr. Meredith Grey and her coworkers as they become friends, enemies, and lovers. The key to Grey’s Anatomy’s success lies in amazingly crafted characters, season-long arcs, and lots of romance and tragedy. Tears are practically guaranteed when you’re watching "Grey’s". Furthermore, the show tackles real-life issues, such as COVID, shootings, and ferry disasters, which gives the show an incredibly realistic and honest tone. With that, there is only one more thing left to settle – are you Team McDreamy or McSteamy? (Stream on Hulu, Prime Video, HBO Max, Netflix, Peacock, PLEX, Tubi, Pluto TV, and Roku)

2. "The Good Doctor" (2017-2024)

The Good Doctor took a saturated genre and added something unique to it – a genius surgery resident with autism. The show challenges viewers’ perspectives of what a traditional doctor looks like and offers a unique insight into neurodiversity. "The Good Doctor" teaches us not to judge but to believe in ourselves. Against all doubts, the protagonist excels in high-pressure environments, which adds a whole new layer of conflict that is like a breath of fresh air to the world of medical TV shows. (Stream on Hulu)

3. "New Amsterdam" (2018-2022)

It is no secret that the healthcare system is a complex issue with many problems around it. "New Amsterdam" addresses that. The show is inspired by the real-life public hospitals of New York and is centered around a protagonist trying to reform the system. "New Amsterdam" follows medical director Dr. Max Goodwin as he tears down the bureaucracy to help his patients and give them the aid they deserve. The show easily stands out amongst its competitors through its idealism and social criticism, which engages viewers both emotionally and intellectually. (Stream on Netflix and Peacock)

4. "Chicago Med" (2015-present)

Moving a bit more west, "Chicago Med" draws its unique charm from being part of NBC's larger "Chicago" franchise. The medical drama often intertwines stories from "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago P.D.", giving the audience triple the drama and triple the stakes. Not only does this make the show more engaging to watch, but it also gives it an authentic touch that so many medical dramas seem to miss. It’s great for anyone who is looking for a balance of realism and drama-driven storytelling. Catch the Season 11 premiere on October 1! (Stream on Hulu, Peacock, Prime Video, Pluto TV, PLEX, Tubi, and Roku)

5. "Scrubs" (2001-2010)

The shows we have discussed so far are all high-stakes dramas, so naturally, "Scrubs" already stands out. It is a slapstick comedy show that appeals through its unique blend of humor, absurd fantasy sequences, and unexpected emotional storylines. The show focuses on a group of young doctors who are learning how to cope (or not cope) with the emotional toll that comes with the job. A great new perspective on the genre that reminds viewers that the medical field isn’t just about life and death, and that one must find humor in chaos. And good news for fans: a reboot is currently in the works! (Stream on Hulu, Peacock, Pluto TV, PLEX, Tubi, and Roku)

6. "ER" (1994-2009)

"ER" walked so that "Grey’s Anatomy" could run. It was the first of its kind to portray a fast-paced and realistic hospital setting, making it unique for its time. But even today, "ER" stands out through its humane characters and vulnerable moments in the show. Plus, with a stellar ensemble cast that includes a young George Clooney, it just simply is worth a look. (Stream on Hulu and HBO Max)

7. "House" (2004-2012)

Most of the time in movies, the main character is likable and relatable. Not in "House". In the medical TV show, we follow the life of Dr. House – a cynical, egoistic medical genius. He is disliked by his co-workers, addicted to pain medication, and disregards hospital rules. And as if that’s not unique enough, the show also focuses on rare diseases and diagnostic puzzles, as opposed to the chaos and surgical drama of "ER". "House" truly stands out amongst its competitors through its focus on brains rather than heart. But don’t think that doesn’t mean you won’t get emotional -- the tears will sneak up on you! (Stream on Hulu, Prime Video, and PLEX)

8. "The Resident" (2018-2023)

We’ve talked about romance, crossovers, system reforms, and more, but do you know what we haven’t covered yet? The business side of medicine. That’s where "The Resident" comes in. The series follows the staff of Chastain Park Memorial Hospital as they try to do the right thing in a system that makes them challenge their morals. "The Resident" exposes how bureaucracy, corruption, and ethical dilemmas can complicate patient care. It is gritty, mature, and perfect for anyone who loves to watch flawed heroes fight an even more flawed system. (Stream on Paramount+, Hulu, Prime Video, HBO Max, Netflix, Peacock, Pluto TV, PLEX, and Roku)

9. "Nurse Jackie" (2009-2015)

Finally, we cannot complete this list without talking about "Nurse Jackie". What makes this medical drama stand out is that it follows the life of a brilliant ER nurse who is battling a drug addiction. But that doesn’t stop her from holding the place together and saving lives better than most physicians around her. The show has a unique mix of dark comedy, heavy emotions, and unpredictable chaos. It’s not your typical story about heroes in white coats – it’s much more relatable than that. It’s about getting through the day. Yes, "Nurse Jackie" is one of those rare medical dramas that manages to capture a sense of reality while also being an entertaining TV show. Definitely worth a watch! (Available on VOD/Digital)
