5 Political TV Shows To Binge This Election Season!

Written by Noelle Henderson. Published: August 24 2024

As we get closer to November, the talk of politics, DC, and elections is all anyone can discuss. These TV shows definitely will not fill you in on this year's presidential election specifically, but they are all great politically-centered shows to watch this year and still contain some relevance to today's political climate. Whether you want to get in the mood to vote this fall or just need a new show to watch, here are four great political shows available for streaming!

1. "Veep"

This iconic TV show is a comedy following Vice President Selina Meyer, played by Julie Louis-Dreyfus. With its talented ensemble cast, it is witty and remarkably funny. We also never see the President. It’s all about Miss VP herself! You can’t help but be shocked at all the things Meyer is forced to juggle with her (sometimes) incompetent staff. Being the President is hard, but being his VP is even harder. "Veep" is THE political show for comedy lovers. Stream on Max.

2. "Scandal"

Drama. Heartbreak. Love Affairs. "Scandal" has it all! Shonda Rimes altered television and our brains forever when she introduced the world to Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn as fixer Olivia Pope and President Fitzgerald Grant, respectively. Olivia is Fitz’s communications director, whom he manages to develop feelings for. The issue is that Fitz is not only the POTUS, he’s also married… This intense drama series features 7 seasons of a forbidden love affair, which only improves as the series progresses. "Scandal" is a must-watch in and out of the election season. Special shoutout for the Olivia/Fitz reunion at the Democratic National Convention earlier this week! Stream on Hulu and Disney+.

3. "Homeland"

"Homeland" is much more “insider” than the rest of the shows on this list. The series follows CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) after she returns home from being held captive for 8 years. She is later placed on a dangerous mission in the Middle East and, due to her trauma from the mission, can no longer work with the CIA. This 8-season show demonstrates a completely different side of politics -- the people who work on the inside to protect powerful people like the President and everything it takes to work this close to danger and be a good CIA Agent. Carrie is a prime example of the real psychological effects of the trauma these agents have to endure to get their jobs done. Stream on Hulu and Disney+.

4. "The Politician"

If you enjoy the wonders of Ben Platt’s voice and you still haven’t seen "The Politician", it’s time you tune in. Payton Hobart is going to be president… of his high school class. He will also be the President of the United States, but he’s not quite in the age range yet. Regardless, he knows. This dramedy features all the scandal and drama as its counterparts set in Washington, but teenagers are addressing the issues. There are only two seasons, but they are both incredibly entertaining. Stream on Netflix.

5. "The West Wing"
Aaron Sorkin's now-iconic drama follows the ins and outs of the daily goings-on at the White House, from the staffers who keep the political machine running all the way up to the President himself. 7 seasons and 26 Emmys later, this show is considered the blueprint for all political dramas since. Stream on Max.
