From mom jeans and slip dresses to biker shorts and bucket hats, the era of the '90s will forever bring a warm sense of nostalgia. Read below for some fashion inspo to channel your inner Rachel Green, Khadijah James, or Ashley Banks!
1. "Friends" – Rachel Green (1994)
From leather blazers to silk button-downs and slip dresses, Rachel Green (played by Jennifer Aniston) from "Friends" was a ‘90s fashion muse! Her wardrobe in 3 words? Preppy, casual, and cool. She embraced this style by bringing a sophisticated yet feminine edge to her looks. The effortless minimalism of simple tees, square necklines, and block heels is why her closet of looks is still talked about today. Even in the unpredictable moments that life threw at Rachel, we for sure know one thing, and it’s that she can pull off any style in any place!
2. "Sister, Sister" – Tia and Tamera (1994)
Nothing says the ‘90s like plaid, baggy denim, bold patterns, and matching sets – which were ultimate favorites of Tia and Tamera Mowry's characters on "Sister, Sister"! In earlier seasons, the twins often wore coordinating outfits, color-blocking tops, and overalls, plus they knew a lesson or two about layering. Hats were also staples in their closets, as they donned bucket hats, Kofi hats, and Kangol hats over their gorgeous curls!
3. "Living Single" – Khadijah James (1993)
The prevalence of HBCU sweatshirts and apparel, frequently sported by Queen Latifah's character Khadijah on "Living Single", was one of the most significant touchstones from Black ‘90s television! With the show based in the heart of Brooklyn, Khadijah's closet was filled with relaxed streetwear, gold accessories, and an impressive shoe game. As the editor and publisher of a fashion magazine, she also knew how to dress up for any special occasion with printed vests and sleek blazers. We love a girl that can do both!
4. "The Nanny" – Fran Fine (1993)
Fran’s (Fran Drescher) fashion-forward flair was an extension of her vivid personality! There was certainly no fear in donning bold colors, eclectic patterns, and a range of textures, such as leather and latex. Her closet was filled with some of the biggest designers of the ‘90s, which included Ralph Lauren, John Galliano, Marc Jacobs, and, one of her favorites, Moschino. Fran was no stranger to a classic mini skirt, blazer, or turtleneck!
5. "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" – Ashley Banks (1990)
As the trendsetter in her family and on the show, Ashley’s (Tatyana Ali) expressive, cool, flirty, and laid-back style was one of the best representations of the era of ‘90s fashion! In her earlier seasons, she was spotted in bold printed sets and poofy dresses that reflected her cheery personality as a pre-teen. As she transitioned into adolescence, Ashley traded those pieces in for baby tees, combat boots, mom jeans, and miniskirts – quite familiar pieces that we see again now in 2023!
