Mitchel Musso Talks New Music & Iconic Hannah Montana Moments

Hi, I'm Mitchell musso. I'm with young Hollywood and we're about to take a walk down memory lane.

What's up? Young Hollywood today with a very special guest. Hello Mitchell. Hi, how are you feeling today?

I feel pretty good.

Are you so excited to be here?

Yeah, I am.

And we explained a little bit what we're going to do with you with the stack of pictures, right? So we're gonna take a walk down memory lane,

excited, I'm nervous, but I am excited. Yeah.

And I asked you before when the cameras are off how if a lot of people ask you obviously about your childhood and you know, being on Hannah Montana, Is that like a common thing for you?

Yeah, definitely. People love to know about um my childhood and of course you have music now too, we're gonna talk about that.

So you have a new single experience out

Yeah. Experiences out volcanoes out the records, out the whole mix tapes, out ghost is out. I hope everybody gets a chance to hear it. We put a lot into it.

Yeah. How long have you been sitting on the mixtape?

Okay, so the mixtape started about a year ago, a little bit over a year ago, we went through hundreds of songs and thousands of bounces and the funniest thing is when I'm in the studio with uh with my team and we're running back and forth from the studio to the car to hear it on different sound systems just to make sure that it sounds right in the car. That's where a lot of people listen to their music. Um you'll get 20 bounces of the same song and I've heard them this song over and over and over and over again. To the point of where I don't even know if it's good anymore. You know what I mean? Like I don't know if it's good, I don't know if it's bad. Um so um it is an experience in itself, it's like when you post an instagram picture and then you stare at it for too long and you're like I'm ugly, this is an awful photo of myself. I should not post that. I'm gonna delete instagram.

Yeah and I also love how you go back and forth. That's the first time I've heard that. Which I assume a lot of people do that but you go back and forth to here in a different,

oh my god like hundreds of times just because you'll hear like little things like the subs not the right E. Q. Or the vocal here needs to be pulled or you can hear the microphone, you hear people in the background, it's a number of things but it's never ending. And these are things that nobody would ever ever ever nobody will ever hear. But I obsess over them. Yeah. Um so it took a minute just to put 13 songs together on a mixed tape but that's why it's a bum.

Yeah it is it's good okay ready to see the pictures.

Oh gosh okay I'm gonna lay them out.

Okay, we're gonna shove them over towards you. We're gonna have some all over the place. We'll see. That's you now then and now with your mixtape photo is this? I have one favorite here that I can't wait for you to see this one. I love because the games, games, games games, love that, love that. Yeah, I remember that. Yeah, I love that photo Polaroid from behind the scenes from the front. What other photos are you about to pull out of here? There's only two laps. So it's like totally fine.

That is terrifying. There we go. Right memory lane. This is a beautiful photo though. Actually this is what kind of started it all this. I remember this day like yesterday these two girls are uh everything really, really cool. Really cool moment. That was when we were reading for um uh we're reading the pilot in front of the executives for Hannah and uh we all just meshed so well. They said that's our group of kids and uh here's Hannah Montana.

Did you have any idea that your life would turn into what it was from that day? Turn into this? Is that

I have no idea what this is. This is bob. So bob and then I think this one was Tiger V or one of them. But those magazines where everybody's childhood. Yeah, like literally this was on people's walls everywhere. Girls all over the place. This is a great thing to, this is pretty recent. Yeah, we got that for me. Yeah. I actually just texted m two. I'm probably gonna go get dinner with them while we're here because we're here for a couple days to impress stuff. Um, yeah, I mean, dude, this is not just, y'all's childhood. This is my childhood, this, of all of my friends, childhood and uh, yeah, it's a beautiful thing.

Crazy. Yeah, It's crazy. Crazy. Okay, well, scratch that one off because you didn't explain that one. Okay. We're gonna explain to every single one of these photos. Yeah. Oh my God. Okay. So for this one, the question, this one right here. Uh, okay. So, so you obviously are holding a very, very, very old iphone compared to what it is now. How do you, if Tiktok was a thing in social media was as big as it is now when Hannah Montana days, how different do you think you're like, the course of Hannah Montana would have turned out? That's a good question. Like, would it have hit the way that it did? Yeah. Like do you think you'd be like huge on Tiktok? Because there's so many shows that blow up because of, you know,

and everybody says, I need to make a Tiktok and I probably should. And I will eventually. But yeah, I mean, I would think anything that's social media oriented. Being able to, uh, talk to your fans. Um, uh, and keep them interactive. Yeah, I think that it would have been huge on Tiktok. Yeah.

Well, you need to make one because you also have music. I think it is still huge on Tiktok. I still see Tiktok's that they pull clips from Hannah on. Okay, So the Tiktok thing. So you think like Tiktok would be,

Yeah, I mean, yeah, to reiterate, I still think Hannah's timeless. So there will be Tiktok and instagram snaps it forever. Forever and ever. I mean it's a big deal. It is a big deal.

Okay, now this one, this is Oliver singing, that is Oliver singing. Do you did you think was music always think that's let's Make This Last Forever? I think that was one of the first songs that I was that I sang on this on the, on Hannah.

Do I? Yeah, I mean music's been a part of my life since I was a kid before was an actor and I'm always going to be an actor because I love entertaining, I love acting. I love singing. Um but there was this moment about a year ago where uh, with, with my music and like I have a studio in the house and stuff. So it's really um how do I explain that there's something different about me going in and making a song versus me working with an entire team to create a movie or, or, or do a show or whatever. Um it's so personal. It's like such a personal thing. Um that I don't think very many people get to see, especially when you don't have a label and you're not working with uh an umbrella of whatever network is that you're signed to, that I have all creative control, right? So um yeah, it's just personal. It's just like more invasive in my life, which I love, which I want people to to see in here and out of your mix tape and all the songs that you have out. What would you say is the one that's most personal to you

loser.

And it's not a single, it's not, it was actually like one take and it just clicked for me that I wanted to keep it that way. It's very unorthodox with music. I think that anybody who's a producer or uh has a background in music, it's gonna be like, God, the Eq everything about this is all sorts of, but or messed up all of its all sorts all over the place. But the lyrics and what came out during that moment hits this uh note in my head that just works. Um as far as my favorite song, my favorite song kind of changes with the days, I'll listen to the record and I like one thing more and then I like nothing more. And then I want to pull this thing and I want to delete the whole thing and just completely hide under a rock for the next year. Um But yeah I mean uh listen the records called Ghost and I think that we're all pretty uh familiar with me and I've been hiding right? And everybody says that every interview that I go into there like dude what the hell are you doing? Like where have you been, what are you doing? Uh growing and working on myself and

you worked so much your whole entire life that it was like you probably wanted to take a step back real life like take a minute and like really focus on music because that's like your passion.

Yeah what she said that's perfect, that's exactly that's exactly what it was and um and just uh just experiencing life outside of the cameras and the lights and um entertaining. Yeah. Yeah you're crazy. But I mean the second I was like hey I really want to start putting stuff together the whole team already, we're ready to go. So um yeah we're sort of jumping into this thing head first.

I'm really sort of just opening everything up about myself in this record and saying things that I I don't know if I should say or not say but it's music I'm gonna say anyways um and I hope that people can connect with it and relate to it because I'm pretty relatable, I don't live really wild lifestyle don't um buy mansions and so I'm not driving around and super nice cars. I'm pretty um like I'm pretty Quiet.

Yeah and that's why the album is called ghost. I mean I literally was Ghost on us for a little bit and now you're back for years.

Um Yeah, here to here to here, here to inspire. I'm here to motivate people and hopefully people like the record, I'm still scared. I'm scared right now. Talking to you.

Yeah, that's the point. We're very scared here. Okay, which one do you want next?

Oh man, this is a really cool photo. I mean anything with me and these girls are tight because I love them. Um What comes to mind when you see that photo? My clothes are nuts. But uh all of our clothes are nuts. Yeah, like every back to bed.

What about like did you pick out your, any of your outfits? Like did you know I have control over that.

No, definitely not. No. I mean I guess when we got somewhere in this world, maybe I started making some decisions, but really not many. Honestly, my decisions aren't great Anyways when it comes to things like do you think?

But did you like your outfits like were you like, oh I look really good today when you were on set? Like when they threw you in that?

Sure, I mean do I love this outfit? No, I don't ever want to wear this outfit again. But no, I mean it's not a bad thing. Listen, our wardrobe girls were freaking like look at the difference between these two dudes. What is this? Mike Stanley, right? This is the alter ego for Hannah. And then um I guess just Oliver being Oliver whatever that is. But no, I think you look good. I mean we look like rock stars and the hair, the hair is really yeah, the hair is long, is it true that you pierced your ears? And then they had you grow out the hair because your ears are pierced.

I did a couple of yeah, I had done a couple of things like when I yeah pierced my ears, my ears. Um But then they let me start, I started wearing earrings in the show when Oliver started doing music. So it's like kind of a I was like okay at one point but yeah, maybe maybe I pierced them too early.

Um When Oliver started doing music in the show, did you like was that your favorite part of like filming?

No, not necessarily. I think my favorite part of filming was being with our cast. I think that we were all pretty freaking funny and uh moistness and Jr in these shots in Billy Ray's not either. But between all of us is like your you develop this relationship with people and it's so much closer than family. I don't even know and I know people are like families. The closest that you have, there's there's something different about building an organic relationship with people that were not blood and end up being your family. Um, I will never forget, you know, I'll never Yeah. Um some of the greatest moments of my life were with the with this group of people.

And what would you say do you think? Miley and Emily, what song do you think would be their favorite from here on ghost?

I think volcano. I think I think volcanoes are really uh strong single, and that's the new one. Yeah. And we just got the video back for volcano and I know that this is gonna be delayed, but the video is not my favorite. So, we have to go back into the editing. Uh once we fix it. Great. The video video a little out there. So we gotta, we'll figure that out.

What was the, well, I guess, wait, will the video be out?

It'll be out in two weeks. It'll be out.

Oh yeah. Okay. Now, the beloved question that everybody wants to know about Disney games. Disney games, how was the whole experience overall for you? Would you say was I always read, didn't I? I think, I think which one was this the first year you might have been? Green or blue?

I think that I was green at one point. So this is probably the first year.

What was my favorite, What what was the whole overall vibe? Like, what was your mindset of the Dc games?

Oh my gosh, this is my favorite part of, of of what Disney does for uh it's casts. Uh they get everybody together, right? So not just from your show, not just from Hannah, but from wizards and Sweet Life and High School Musical, because not just shows, it's the movies too, like whatever that, whatever was going on during that time. They get everybody together, they throw you on a plane, they fly to florida and you're at the park, you know, you're at Disney World uh for uh a week or two, it might have been two weeks. Um but there's there's like these because we're kids to, you know, we're, yeah, we're working in kind of an adult industry and we have like an adult job, but we're still Children and we're still growing and um, it was sort of like, uh, it's like vacation with your friends, but you're still working and you're growing and you're experiencing life with one another. Um, and to incorporate all the shows together. Yeah, it's cool. It's cool. It's a lot of fun, but the competitive part I think gets me the most, I'm pretty competitive. Um which is why we won. For sure. Red Team definitely did win.

But yeah, that aside winning aside aside, do you remember what your favorite game was that you did like, individual game. I know a lot of the relay stuff was cool. Um what was my favorite,

The relay stuff was cool. I think everybody was involved in school because like, yeah, even as competitive as I am, it's also, uh, just kids being kids. There's a lot going on behind the scenes too. It's not just the game.

And do you remember when you got matched to who your team was like, was that like, did you guys text each other or call each other from different shows when you were kids? Like would you go back to the hotel rooms and be like, oh, let me head up whoever and

I still have that are from that era of my life and that we're on different shows that weren't on Hannah, not just that there were kids from other, their international Disney stars. So kids in other countries that were on their Disney shows and other countries, um, that we're on our, on our teams and uh, I don't, I don't talk to them anymore, but, but that was really cool. You know, get a bunch of people from different countries to come together and hang.

Okay, which one should we grab now? We have like four left that this is more present day, still still hangout. Pretty recent.

I was shooting an independent movie and I came down, I think it's called bachelor lions and Emily, I called Emily and I was like, hey, we need to go get dinner and she texted voices and moist texted Jason. Um, and yeah, this was a really fun day. I don't remember what restaurant that is that someone, uh, uh, laurel canyon or something.

I just interviewed Jason but it was over zoom. So he would know. We asked him about firefly, was that what was going on? I think there was a restaurant, I don't know, maybe, I don't know. I think that we went to at least go firefly, maybe we'll say it is sure. But interviewed him, we asked about the games too in just like his hand and he had nothing but good things to say too. So that's cool that you guys are still

Oh yeah, again, the, like, I think that we have one of the more stellar casts than most of these shows were all like independently doing our own thing and everybody is their own success story and uh really proud of these people to be able to say that they're close to, you know what I mean? Just like proud of my family. Yeah, yeah, that was, that was the beginning of, this was my apartment, this was taken to my apartment in Burbank um that I don't have any more, but I had this place in Burbank when I was shooting pair of kings because we shot over at the Gower lot and it was just a little bit closer. I think this is actually the pilot episode, is that the pilot episode. This is like the very beginning. I dressed so funny. I mean a wife beater, probably some Gucci glasses And also this is a photo of me and my mom right here from people, which is kind of cool. Everything else. I don't know what's going on. But this, it's the beginning of Perkins and I don't know if you guys ever watched their kings, but that's a great show. Too awesome. Yeah. Ryan Ochoa is great. Gino seekers, Kelsey chow! Who's on Yellowstone now? She's, she's incredible. Yeah, she's flourishing. But yeah, I think that that was the pilot. I think that I just read the pilot and I was like, oh my gosh, this is um, doesn't seem like Disney and I was like, this is definitely different. I would love to do it very different than what you have been up to. It was different than Hannah for short and you posted this one was you and your caption that your mom found these photos? Glad she did love that. Yeah.

Well I guess that this is like multiple pictures.

This is I think we're eating um, dinner somewhere and I'm wearing this really silly fedora. I think that that's why I've written that. But this is behind the scenes. What I guess what people don't know is when we're shooting the show or when we were shooting the show and I think any sitcom. Um, you have a, you have uh, an audience that's there to like run laughs and do the O and O and like all that stuff by sit home whenever you hear it and like the show and so after the show we would have certain people um whatever tickets they had, but they would come through and take photos with the cast, so we'd sit here and they sit in our little director chairs and um and say thank you for coming to the show and thank you for supporting and um they get a photo and yeah, we did this every friday, every friday, every friday sunday. Yeah, Yeah, it was so we were all wrapped and ready to get out of there or go do something, go get yogurt, or go bowling, or like we were ready to go do something. Yeah. Yeah, just go be kids if you could write, like, is there anything that you still have yet in music to write about that you want to write about and think about um chapter of your life or anything that I missed this mix tape that you're gonna get into? Yeah, I definitely, I think that there are things I'm I'm a pretty open book again and you'll hear it in this in the mix tape, just about just things that I probably couldn't have said when I was working really, really close with Disney. Um But I think there's always something that I don't want to write about and writing is sort of therapeutic to me just as much as going and talking to a therapist about? Maybe something that you need a professional opinion on. Uh and I get the same thing out of that, that I get out of the gym that I get out of um any type of like physical activity. Um But yeah, I think that there's a bunch of stuff that I would love to write about that I haven't written about because maybe it's too um difficult to talk about. Yeah.

You know, it'll help though maybe to write about it and think about it one day, you're probably right. And is there any big goal that you have that would come from music or with your music?

I think my goals are are bigger than man, I have such massive goals. Um It's listen like music is such a tough thing to break into, right? And it's sort of just a consistent uphill battle. Um and there's no peak, you know, you can go as high as you want or you can just never release anything. Um We're at that stage right now in the music just because I'm sort of established in um the acting world or in the music world. Um The fight is just started, you know what I mean? Um You gotta show, prove yourself, you know, and people have to realize like that you are doing music a lot and often and everything like that, you gotta kind of consistently putting things together and putting things out and again, it's it's everything to me right now. Um that's what we're gonna do. Yeah, so there's a lot, there's a lot of, yeah, it's not ending anytime soon and it's a big plate, it's like I knew what I was getting myself into because we've done it forever. But um everything really opened up in my head about, oh my gosh, I forgot how much hard work that this takes and the team uh to to shoot you off into this uh where you need to be, you know, I mean keep you on the right trajectory uh fighting for Um to be heard. Yeah.

It's hard to be heard. Every industry that really that you're diving and like putting yourself on the line out there and everything like acting music like it's hard. You really have to work at it. Yeah.

That part too, which is putting yourself out there, that's probably the hardest thing for I would imagine for people. Uh I don't really feel that I'm more so uh go into hiding or get away from all this stuff because I it's like me in my own head, you know what I mean? I don't really care what people have to say about me. Um And I'm and I don't I'm not gonna fight people on. Is this song good or is the music good or is this show good or whatever? I sort of just let the work speak for itself. Um I'm here to just have fun, you know what I mean? And I enjoy um So as soon as my brain allowed me to start putting myself back out there, which took a lot, a lot of growth, like just being like comfortable with yourself to even posted in instagram. It's a lot. It's a lot. It's a lot and it's honestly not my favorite thing and the sad thing is, is that's like where all the fans are and that's where all your people are. Um so I feel guilty all the time, but I didn't want to really push anything until I knew for sure it was something to be heard and felt good about it. Yeah,

well thank God you did it. Thank God you were here. I wouldn't be here overlooking santa Monica beach. Talking about this guy. Did you have fun if you love the game? Was it fun? The Disney little throw bag?
