BookTok, the subsection of TikTok for book lovers, is known for creators sharing and circulating their current favorite reads, and this often results in many books getting propelled into viral popularity. Book-to-screen adaptations are nothing new, but the incredible power over virality that a subgroup of social media holds is unlike anything we have seen before. As readers gush with others about their adoration for certain books, many authors experience their work becoming book-to-screen adaptations. This includes Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Normal People and Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney, and The Hating Game by Sally Thorne.

If you haven’t already devoured the 5 books below that the BookTok community cherishes, then it’s time to add them to your must-read list because they are becoming film or TV series adaptations!

1. People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

Emily Henry has become a must-buy author for numerous rom-com readers, and her sophomore novel is currently in the works to become a movie. It will be directed by Brett Haley, who is already familiar with book-to-screen adaptations seeing as he directed All the Bright Places, the beloved novel of Jennifer Niven. People We Meet on Vacation follows best friends Poppy and Alex, whose annual Summer trips and friendship came to a screeching halt after a falling-out. Narrated in a dual timeline between past Summer travels and the present, Poppy attempts to get her best friend back by taking him on a vacation for one last hurrah. This story is friends-to-lovers excellence, and we can’t wait to meet our screen Poppy and Alex.

2. Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

In this best-selling novel, the First Son of the United States, Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez), and the Prince of Wales, Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), fall into a secretive romance despite their initial feud. This movie set for Prime Video has already wrapped filming in London, with Matthew López making his directorial debut. Now, we’re simply counting down the days until we get to see the magic unfold into a beautiful, glorious love story that deserves to be seen on a silver screen.

3. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

If you have seen a gorgeous black and gold book cover grace your phone screen, chances are it was V.E. Schwab’s The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. Augustine Frizzell will direct, and she is known for her feature film debut Never Goin’ Back and the film adaptation of Jojo Moyes’s The Last Letter From Your Lover. Schwab narrates the remarkable journey of Addie LaRue, an 18th-century Frenchwoman who, after making a deal with the Devil in exchange for immortality, is doomed to be forgotten by every person she ever comes across. However, 300 years in the future, she crosses paths with a man in a bookstore who remembers who she is. It is a breathtakingly devastating story that will break your heart wide open and leave an indelible mark on it. This movie is still being developed, but grand-scale stories always take time.

4. Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan

It’s been quite an exciting time indeed to discover that Naoise Dolan’s novel is being adapted into a TV series! "Bridgerton"’s very own diamond, Phoebe Dynevor, is executive producing and starring in this romance for Amazon Studios. Dolan is co-writing with filmmaker Cooper Raiff, creator of Cha Cha Real Smooth, which received popular and critical acclaim. Exciting Times revolves around Ava, an Irish woman teaching English in Hong Kong, who gets mixed up in a love triangle with a dazzling female lawyer and a frosty male banker. Dolan’s writing is raw, intimate, and perceptive – very reminiscent of Sally Rooney. With such a stellar team attached to this project, we are certain this series will become an absolute treasure.

5. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Taylor Jenkins Reid is an unstoppable force in the literary world, and her next buzzy book-to-screen adaptation appears to be the revered BookTok sensation The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. This is the story of a fictional Hollywood icon, Evelyn Hugo, who recounts the story of her life to an obscure reporter, Monique. Evelyn lays it all out on the table – the glitz, glamour, scandals, and secrets. The film will be released by Netflix, and although no cast has been announced yet, social media users are dream-casting in the meantime. This stunning book is pretty much the poster child for BookTok, so readers everywhere are patiently waiting to watch this masterpiece come to life.
