Oh yeah. You can do so many things. You can dance, you can act, you can sing, you can fly.

Of course, me, you're talking about the Lost Boys, but I left out a title of yours that is ridiculously important. Tony award. Winner. Thank you. Does it roll up your tongue easily?

Yes. I still can't really process it. I think it'll take like probably two full years.

Walk me through what it feels like the next day showing up to this theater knowing that you won the Tony.

Oh, man, that was a crazy experience. I mean, Fisana won too. And then we won a bunch for the show in general. For total. So, yeah. So, it was just amazing to um, come to work the next day and we did this fun thing where we put we put Tony's on different parts of the set during the show as like little Easter eggs that people could find it. So, that was fun. The whole night was a real celebration of everyone in the cast, like, the show doesn't exist without everybody, and my character isn't cool unless the rest of the cast tells you that and like we all built this thing together. It felt like we were literally part of a sporting event the next day.

These were acrylics and uh right now we actually have like they're starting to they're starting to raise, but these are real. These are real, these are real.

Okay, so we're inside the Palace theater right now. What's a day in the life of a Tony Ward winner when they enter for work?

Uh, I usually come in and I try this this building is kind of separated, like all the departments are all separated, so I try if I can to make like eye contact and contact with people. So, I'll talk to Stanley or Irene here at stage door real quick. Go in, usually we get our, like, if people have left gifts and we haven't been able to stage door the night before, there's usually some like little things that the fans leave.

I did see all of the fans out there waiting for a glimpse of you. Does that get old ever? Or is it still day or fresh?

No, it's so sweet. And and and I I I I have a deep appreciation for the um, the support I have and the support we have and I have personally experienced that people understand respectful boundaries to a certain point. So, it's like if I'm going into work, I'm like we can take a quick photo, but then it's like, you know, I gotta go and do my thing and they understand that.

All right. So, let's see what you do.

Yeah, okay. Like I think what people don't see backstage is that it's just stairs after stairs after stairs.

Oh, this is exciting. Stop.

Yeah. Oh, let me just this is the green room. So, you have like everyone. You can even hear people playing music in there.

Wardrobe. I mean, just even like what you're passing by.

I know. I know. It's like everyday for me. I forget how amazing this is.

Look at this wardrobe. Can I touch it? I mean, look at the studs. Yeah, the details are incredible. Where's my room?

I try to keep it very warm. I have a bunch of my, uh, bunch of fan art I've received here. A bunch of fan art here too, but I this is something I made in this scene where we're hanging upside down, so I took um, Polaroids of all the guys and we're all like hanging upside down in my door. And if you flip it, then it's like us right side up.

I have to come in here. This is the sexiest, coolest, most David essque dressing room, I think I would have expected. This is amazing.

I wanted it to be a combo of kind of like, yeah, the vampire energy, but also like the warm, earthy, zen vibe that this is sort of like similar to like what I kind of decorate my apartment like. I listen to a lot of music, so I made this whole like record wall over here and I have some of my favorite records here and then I have a bunch more over here and I brought a record player. So, at any time I'm in here warming up. I just throw on a record that feels right that day. I also have my guitar here.

You got something you can play like something just Oh, shoot.

Yeah, sure. I mean, I'll just I mean there's a cool story I guess. I don't know if this is even in tune, but um

I love cool stories.

There was a song, I mean, everyone knows it now because it's kind of become this whole um, little Easter egg, but we used to have the song called Brother in the show, which is now a bonus track on the album because the fans loved it so much and we love it so much. Um, but in that number in the show, I used to play the song. Like I I used to like it was one of those moments where, you know, I'm the lead singer, but just for that song, I picked up a guitar and got to play along and um, so that's the song that I know from the show. I don't

Hey, you don't even need a pick, right?

Uh, well, yeah, I mean this is good for like finger picking. You pick it. If I want to do that, but Can you imagine? Yeah, there's a little something.

Keefer Sutherland. He's a producer on this show. As he should be cuz if he wasn't a part of it, that would be weird. Yeah. What's it like stepping into David, who Keefer made just the role iconic in the eighties. How far are you willing to go, Michael?

Keefer came to see the first workshop we did and he got to see that and then immediately wanted to be a producer. Because I think he recognizes that like he wanted to like dive deeper into the characters and how cool would it be to create a character and then like years later you see that character with like more to do and you get to see like more in the inner world of that character where like Keefer really only had didn't have that much time in the movie. Like he's who's he like sticks in your brain, but when you go back and watch the movie, he's really not in all that much of it and he only has a few lines.

Your voice is not David's. Your blood's just racing. You drive me crazy. How can you blame me? How did you even get it there?

You know, I've I've like always liked doing character voices and I've always worked on impressions or like how to change my voice. And so for this, I I started with what Keefer did and I kind of figured out a combo of like Keefer's voice and my voice and then I started adding other things. I've had to kind of grow into them or like change something about myself in order to to meet the challenge, which has been fun.

I saw you backstage with Jordan Fisher at the Tony's. You guys, I saw the little piece you did and I just interviewed him at Moulin Rouge last year and when I saw you two together, I was like emotional just watching the two of you. I felt the community aspect. I get to be somehow a part of this you're on a grander like scale community, which is what I know means the most to you and I kind of felt even a small part of that watching the two of you together. So

Oh, he's the best. Yeah. And and also like there's like a really sweet thing with the like the Orphiuses, like all of us who have played that role, there is like such a connection to that role that when we get to meet each other, there is already kind of like a an unspoken connection even through that role that means so much to us. So, yeah, and Jordan has always been an inspiration, so it was great to talk to him.

Can you recognize us without our? Yeah, really? Yeah. Um, let me go upside down. Oh, no. That's not. No, that won't help. I can't. You guys, I'll I'll hold your ankles. Do you need to tidy up at all? No. This is it. Wow. Okay, it's a dressing room for four guys and it looks like a typical dressing room for four guys. Yeah. Gentlemen, um, this room is kind of fun and I'm just gonna stay here all night and while you're coming and going on stage, I'm just gonna stay cuz this looks like a place to be. Second guest: It is kind of the place to be. I mean, we're sort of central literally in the theater, but we have gatherings, we play music in here. You know, we're friendly vampires, honestly, off stage.

Walk me through how you even get ready for a show. And especially when you have two shows a day. It's insane. Second guest: Well, right now we're about to go do our um lift, fight, fall call where we run a fall from the bridge, which is a stun in the show if you come and see it. We uh we fall about what? 16, 17 feet into uh darkness. Second guest: So, we have to run that and then all the lifts and the punches and stuff. So, we start with that and then, you know, we've got our like little PT setup over here with like foam rollers, yoga blocks, and weights and we just, you know, get the body loose.

You guys have a cult following. They're all outside. They wait before the show. They're waiting after. What would be surprising to your fans that like they can't see backstage about you guys. Second guest: We're a bunch of nerds. Yeah. That's probably the best one. First guest: I love that. I mean, Dean gets in the shower 15 minutes before the show. I don't know how he gets ready, but Second guest: So, that's a surprise. First guest: I'm ready. I'm ready.

What about hair and makeup? First guest: Oh, yeah, it's all. He does. 15 minutes, shower, hair, makeup, wardrobe done. I don't know how. I'm always stressed out about it personally. I'm like, cuz I'm like feeling behind.

Did any of you just get offered the vampire part or did you have to go through callback after callback after callback? First guest: Callback after callback. This was, I feel like this show was like everyone wanted to be in this. I mean, you know like you get to see everybody. You listen to the music and you're like, I got to do this.

Okay, I'm hearing that you guys need to do your fight calling call. Okay, you guys gotta go. Thank you for being. First guest: I'm going to fight vampires now.

Yeah, you guys were spot on. You guys fight vampires. So, is there a trick to surviving vampires? You need some serious skill in order to do it, right? First guest: Yes. Yes. Absolutely.

Yeah. How'd you do it? First guest: You know, we kill at vampires all the time. You know, so it really starts with how you carry yourself. You want to show that you're tough. Yeah. And a good way to do that. Oh. Oh. Yeah. Just having your

Are you ready to defend Santa Carla? First guest: Yeah. I am ready to defend.

Are you ready to learn how to fight these vamps that you've never fought before? First guest: I'm ready to like shut down some vamps. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. First guest: Okay. I present you with your bandana.

Oh my goodness. You're like. Inducted. First guest: Step one is, I would say, check. Now we got to get some like fighting moves in, you know, like let's say it goes to hand-to-hand combat. Like what are you gonna do if a vamp pulls up on you? Second guest: Salt water. You know? Holy water. First guest: Yeah. The holy water is really what's going to burn us. Holy water. This is the squirt gun. Okay. So, when when you get like a a thing of garlic like this, it can be used many ways. Aim for the torso. Just swing it around, you know, that's a good solid one. Give it a shot. Yeah, give it a shot. I'll hold the squirt gun for you. Yes. This is probably going to be the most useful tool when it comes to slaying vampires.

Wow. First guest: This is called the stake. If you can get a vamp right in the heart with a wooden stake, it's basically game over for them.

Are we going underhand or overhand? First guest: I guess it depends how the vamp is coming to you, right? Cuz if he's flying down at you, you're gonna want to go up, right? But if he's if he's sneaking up on you, you're gonna want to go down. Second guest: Down. First guest: We see as we got angles. Yes.

Okay, so if he he's flying cuz they're flying. So, he's flying at me. He's flying at me. I'm going to go First guest: That's perfect. That's perfect. Okay, so we got the garlic. We got the squirt gun with the holy water. Okay. I think you're ready to become a certified vampire killer. You just want to aim. Yep. Get some shots in. Always good to practice. Never know when you need a trick shot.

Okay, now you guys did like a dance like move kind of thing in the show. First guest: Yeah. Then we hit a classic karate kid kick. Right to the dome. And then it's the uppercut. Second guest: Uppercut. Uppercut. First guest: We're gonna defend. A defensive stance. Yeah. And we're gonna charge up all of our awesome frog brother power. Yeah. And then Sam's favorite move.
