Songs We’d Love To Hear In The Upcoming Britney Spears Musical!

Written by Gabbi Wiesehan. Published: June 11 2021

Alright, Britney Army! The time has come! Once Upon a One More Time, the new Britney Spears-inspired jukebox musical, is back on track to premiere this November through January of 2022 at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. In honor of the undisputed Princess of Pop making her debut in the theatre, we’re imagining all of Brit’s most iconic songs as Broadway hits!

What We Know So Far: Once Upon a One More Time revolves around fairytale characters (think princesses -- Cinderella, Snow White, you know the ones) whose age-old stories get a fresh revamp when a badass fairy godmother gives them copies of The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan. Armed with the inspiration and confidence from reading the famous feminist book, the fairytale characters decide to rewrite their stories and live happily ever after on their own terms. Their journey of self-discovery features songs from Brit’s catalog that help narrate and move the plot along. While we currently only know a handful of her songs that’ll be in the musical (“Toxic”, “Circus”, “Oops!...I Did It Again”, ''Lucky”), we can still imagine how well her other songs would fit into this storyline.

"...Baby One More Time"

One of my favorites, honestly. This track from Britney’s debut album would be perfect for Rapunzel. The line, “My loneliness is killing me...” was written for her. Quarantine took its toll on me enough, so I couldn’t imagine being stuck in a tower with zero access to Grubhub or Instacart. I’d like to think that Rapunzel finishes the last chapter of The Feminine Mystique, puts her book down, and thinks, “I’m busting out of this joint on my own; Betty Friedan, give me strength!” We hear those iconic three notes before the mesmerizing “Oh baby, baby!” lines, and before we know it, Rapunzel is breaking out all on her own with great hair and no help from a prince.

"Work B**ch"

Look, all Cinderella wanted was a night off. If I had to clean up after my obnoxious stepsisters and evil stepmother, I’d just want to let loose and party too. What if she had finished the book on the way to the ball and realized that she could be charging people for her impressive housekeeping skills and making bank? On her own terms! She tells the prince all about it before their first dance and he tells her that he’ll support her dreams of starting her own business. I’m seeing a big ballroom number with high-impact choreography -- the kind of energy required for Britney’s 2013 banger. Cindy knows, if she wants a hot body or a Maserati, she has to earn them herself.

"Womanizer"

I know I said "...Baby One More Time" was one of my favorites, but I think "Womanizer" is at the very top. It’s a power anthem if I’ve ever heard one, not to mention one of the best tracks on Circus. I’d like to imagine Sleeping Beauty glaring at Prince Philip and saying, “Yeah, congrats on defeating Maleficent and all, but I don’t remember giving you permission to kiss me.” What better song to tell off a guy who thinks he can treat women however he wants! After her big number, Sleeping Beauty blows him off to hang out with her cool cottagecore fairy aunts. She’ll get around to reading the book.
