During her speech, Holmes gave an emotional tribute to Cruise, "whose commitment to his work and family inspires me daily".
Actress Annette Bening was also honoured at the ceremony, receiving the Crystal Award for Excellence in Film, while Dame Elizabeth Taylor was recognised for her humanitarian efforts. Taylor's granddaughter Naomi Wilding accepted the award on the late star's behalf.
Women in Film President Cathy Shulman also dedicated the event to Hollywood producer Laura Ziskin, who lost her battle with breast cancer earlier this week (beg13Jun11).
