Actor Robin Williams has paid tribute to his idol-turned-mentor Jonathan Winters following his death on Thursday (11Apr13), hailing him as an "amazing friend".

The veteran comedian died of natural causes in Montecito, California at the age of 87, and several stars, including Steve Martin, Albert Brooks and Dick Van Dyke, flocked to offer their condolences.

Williams has now added his memories of Winters, who starred alongside him in the fourth season of sitcom Mork & Mindy in the early 1980s.

In a post on his Facebook.com page, he writes, "First he was my idol, then he was my mentor and amazing friend. I'll miss him huge (sic). He was my Comedy Buddha. Long live the Buddha."
