British royal Prince Harry has been knighted by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in a private ceremony at London's Buckingham Palace.

The army captain was made a 'Sir' on Thursday (04Jun15).

A statement issued by a royal spokesperson reads: "The Queen has been pleased to make the following appointment to the Royal Victorian Order: To be a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO), HRH Prince Henry of Wales."

The prestigious honour recognises personal services to the monarchy and can only be awarded by the Queen herself, instead of by ministerial recommendation.

Prince Harry is due to step down from his role in the military after a 10-year career to focus on his charity efforts.

The 30 year old has taken in two tours of Afghanistan and moved swiftly up the military ranks in 2013 after qualifying as an Apache Aircraft Commander.
